Michael Madsen said on a podcast recently that the "fuckking hat" reaction was not acting. Quentin kept telling him on set to stop wearing the hat and Michael did anyway. However, one day he told him to just keep wearing it. Before filming Quentin and Larry Bishop came up with this scene without Michael's knowledge.

Boss wasn’t wrong in what he is saying. If you are paid just to stare at a wall for 8 hours you turn up on time and wear what your boss deems suitable. The way he spoke to him was wrong but I thought his punishment was actually fair.

I love this interaction for some reason. Maybe because it reveals a hard truth about working a pointless/unfulfilling job with an asshole boss- if you're getting paid to not do your job, the least you can do is show some effort and be a little more than 100% useless.

holding your employee accountable for being late doesnt make you an asshole boss. budd knows he shouldnt be coming in late because clearly he has been warned many times not to mention wearing the hat his boss repeatedly told him not. budd is a bad employee and his boss finally had enough of it.
