@andybowe it was basically a compromise between the various gauges used in the early days of rail travel in Ireland. Gauges ranged from 3 feet to standard gauge to 6 feet

No. The F10s were custom (re)built (from F3As and F7As from the GM&O) for the MBTA. After the MBTA retired them (they bought F40PHs) some ended up being purchased by Metro North who uses them for backup power.

It sure is! You should see when a Cork train is 20 minutes late and track in front is clear, you alsmost get blown off the platform!

In South Australia we still have 3 gauges thanks to an Irish Engineer,English Engineer and a Cost Saving Engineer from early Colonial days. ie 5ft 3in /4ft 81/2in and 3ft 6in. Fortunately you can travel almost anywhere in Australia on Standard Gauge now.(if you can spare the time) as it is a 8000km return trip from Sydney to Perth. All long distance passenger trains are permitted to run at 115km/hr only as a fuel saver because most are over a 1000 tonnes in weight and popular.

FYI, we're watching her depart WB (south) from MERRIT 7 station. She passes block limit GLOVE just south of the station and north of the Glover Ave grade crossing.

And they once had V12 engines, something that LIRR and NY&A still have on their SW6000s! (only as freight/yard movers)

Road....you are thinking of the FL-9, which was indeed built in '57. MN received 4 (410-413)of these rebuilt F3's from MBTA.

they are not that old. Try 1957 (OK, still pretty darn old!)
