Skaters today could stand to learn from watching these programs. No artistry or musicality in today's skaters. Their movements have nothing to do with the music. These were artistic and musical performers. They were so great, unfortunately, over-shadowed by Torville & Dean.

My word ... what did the judges want? They did one of the hardest ballroom dances, quickstep on the ice, fast and precise. I love Torvill & Dean, but this couple were extremely good, did more traditional ice-skating.

This was a crowd pleasing routine, i can remember seeing them do this and felt that they were robbed of points.They were a very good team and this Chaplin theme has been used by others since then but they were not this entertaining.Nicky commentates on Eurosport with Chris Howarth and they humoorous in their comments as well knowledgable.

What an enjoyable free dance! Their marks should have been higher especially the artistic. You could see how the audience loved them!

It's a shame that their performance of this routine at the Olympics has never been uploaded on KZbin, I'm not sure if it was even shown on TV. Their free dance from the Olympics is missing too.

Is the announcer from another planet. This is NOT Ravel's Bolero!

He said "a piece that's completely different from Bolero", or something like that. (Torvill and Dean having been on just before, using Bolero.)

They were better than the American couples who finished ahead of them. Probably not as good as Bestemianova/Bukin or Klimova/Ponomarkenko but it was a golden age of ice dancing. The top 7 or 8 couples of that time are probably amongst the top 20 best of all time....

@@@amybaker4654 I saw different routines of theirs. And I have seen nothing special in them. And I still believe they were much worse than Blumberg and Seibert. They wanted to be the next Torvill and Dean (or maybe it was what British public wanted) but they never had talent, determination and probably also work ethic of T&D.

I think Karen and Nicky were really unlucky here. I think, and this is hugely unsubstantiated, the ISU (judges) had in their minds that B and B and K and P would wrap up the 1st and 2nd places until Calgary and they weren't sure who should be in 3rd and 4th place following B and S retirement. They had two couples here in Karen and Nicky and Tracy and Rob, both exactly the same age, both trained in the British style of skating (Tracey and Rob were trained by Bernard Ford) but only one should go through. They went with Tracy and Rob and Karen and Nicky got the signal that their time was up. It was cruel though because Karen and Nicky missed out on a European medal and were dumped unceremoniously into 6th here behind Born and Schoenborn.
@grantnoroyan92756 жыл бұрын
it was alot to do with the future of skating karen and nicky made a decision to continue 1 more year after sarajevo in 84......tracy and rob were the future of skating both couples were very good in there own way tracy and rob were committed to skating 4 more years and improved every year i think that helped them

Having the audience laughing from joy and delight is really rare in competitive figure skating - they showed a talent not many skaters were able to develop. They were a very good match, both in appearance and ability. Their synchronicity is amazing.

Like most of you, I believe people didn't realise how good these two were. Being in the shadow of Jayne and Christopher must of been hard. They had the potential to go further.

In the years 1981-1984 every pair was in the shadow of Jayne and Chris, even the better skaters than Karen and Nicky. Karen and Nicky had neither the skills nor the mentality to be the best,

This program is one of my all-time favorites. The judging that year was whacky in pairs and dancing, in my opinion. Sure, by today's standards, there isn't much to be said here technically, but it is hard to imagine this couple w/ this level of performance barely beat the young Soviets and placed below the super-dramatic yet technically rough performance by the West Germans...

Always remember this was So Good had they not been up against T&D they could have had some 1sts. Think judging was way down, but we all now know that judging then could be a little bit dodgy & they prob didn't like 2 UK pairs being that good! After all that time I still think it is superb.
