I have been busy repotting; I have been listening to your podcasts as I have been working. well, I was trying to remove a useless root (listening to one about making decisions,) should have used a sharper tool. (that too was another podcast I have listen to lately about sharpening) Jammed the finger it is still hurting 3 hours later. as soon as I did it was only yesterday, I listen to pain and injuries and laughed at some of the things you mention

If I remember correctly. Needle plucking is only done when you have the final basic branch structure you want? Not counting the outer, younger small branches at the end of each branch.
@BonsaiMatsu21 күн бұрын
Needle plucking is also done to balance the strength of your pine. So the strong areas don't continue to get stronger at the expense of the weaker areas of the tree. So it is used for design but more importantly to help balance the allocation of resources in your pine bonsai.

Awesome episode! Question for you. When talking about soil, would you use the same mix for a tree that’s in development or change it to something that’s more organic and not so porous? I feel like the soil mix you mentioned would be better for a tree that’s already developed and in its refinement stage. I’m trying to focus on growth, longer roots, root thickening and trunk thickening.
@BonsaiMatsu28 күн бұрын
@@coreypetersen7630 this mix for me is for all of my trees in their various stages of development. It promotes really strong root growth which then give you foliage growth. It’s how you prune or don’t prune the foliage that you can use to your advantage when developing your bonsai.

Hey Scott. I was the one who asked about the White Pine that was used as the demonstration. My aim was to understand the history of the tree as that information is very attractive to me. I agree with the translator on age but that was just 1 part of my question. I did get the history from the original owner and it made that tree so much more attractive to me. Thanks for your podcast!

@@longhuynh1815 thanks for getting in touch and that’s great to get your perspective. I found it interesting the approach of etiquette when it came to age as I’d never heard it before. Can understand why the history makes it more attractive to you too.

How to get that density ? By pruning the ends every year ? Or to just let it grow for several years ?
@BonsaiMatsuАй бұрын
By pruning around this time of the year as shown in the video. It causes back budding and thereby thickening the foliage mass. Then in autumn you thin it out and clean it up.

I believe it’s a Juniperus chinensis ‘San Jose’ San Jose Juniper as it has both needle and scale foliage.

Quite sure it’s a procumbens. Bark and foliage look a match. Procumbens foliage turns to scale type when they mature. The scale foliage is juvenile growth.
