Try as I may, I couldn't be there in person as I was only a year old and in the Bay area, probably screaming bloody murder with a diaper full of gifts. But I was there in my heart and some 8 years later I would be there in person 🤨👍

This fair sparkled with optimism, hope, wonder and whimsy!! The world is far too cynical, divided and unhappy to ever see something like this ever again. Given all the crime, filth, homeless people, drugs, etc. on today's Seattle streets someone who visited this wondrous fair in '62 would be sick to their stomach seeing what Seattle has fallen to.

This was also CBS's last NHL telecast of that era, as NBC outbid CBS for the NHL United States national TV package later that year. I think CBS did do three NHL telecasts after that: two games of a 1976 exhibition series between NHL clubs and Soviet Clubs (Buffalo Sabres vs. Moscow Wings and Philadelphia Flyers vs. Soviet Central Army), and Game 6 of the 1980 Stanley Cup finals (the New York Islanders' first of four straight championships).

Seattle native here..I was 15yo when I attended this fair...as an adult, I realized that this amazing event was the greatest, most important civic event to happen in the last half of the 20th century...It really put Seattle on the map, and drew 10,000,000 people during the six-month run...and the very futuristic thoughts of the people who conjured up this event, left some of that fairgrounds to be enjoyed by several ensuing generations of NW folks.,,,also, it was one of only two World's Fairs to actually make a profit, finishing around a half-million dollars ahead of the game!...our civic leaders were so visionary, and we were so lucky to have them in our midst....Sadly, during the flyover on opening day, one of the jets veered out of formation...the pilot bailed out due to engine failure...the plane continued North for a few miles, but eventually crashed in Mountlake Terrace, and into a home, killing the two elderly residents.

WOW - Seattle was so much nicer back then. People took pride in their culture, diversity, and inclusion. Even though Seattle has a large diverse population in the present days, segregation and intolerance from one another have become dominant in the 21st century. There was a lot of pride, hope, and determination to show the world what Seattle had to offer back in 1962. Unfortunately, the city of Seattle has become a dangerous place throughout the years. Visiting downtown is very risky and anyone could get shot, mugged, or get assaulted at any given moment. The sad part is that law enforcement has their hands tied on what they can do to address crime due to state regulations. Compare this video over another video named Seattle is dying - it is an eye opener.

"...segregation and intolerance from one another have become dominant in the 21st century." I"m sorry, but segregation and intolerance was at the center of the mythology of "pride, hope, and determination." The simplicity of what you remember, was not the reality for a great many Americans -- then, as well as now. If you look under what the "rising crime" is all about, you will see the Great Divide (the well-to-do and the truly wealthy) is still there. "Crime" does not 'spring out of nowhere.' It comes from that Divide, still with us as much as it was back then. Only the technology has changed.

@@the21stcenturydavincibegin35 You are correct...many larger cities have these malignant problems...and Seattle, back then, while liberal for its time,, still had forms of racial segregation, especially in regards to "redlining" neighborhoods...most minorities in Seattle lived in the Central District...as a white kid living in the Greenlake area, I never saw a Black student until I attended Junior College in the later 60s. This time frame was some sort of peak of comfortable, relaxed living for most people--unless you were poor/Black, etc....Seattle of that time was cleaner, more safe, etc....as a citizen, we did not appreciate what we had going back then.

I was there. I was 2 years old. I have a fascination with water to this day. I have one extremely vivid memory. The pearl divers. They would dive down and surface with a fake pearl in a fake oyster. I remember it like it was yesterday, and I am 62 years old.

I was 8 years old living in Seattle when the fair opened. My school (Latona) was at the north end of Lake Union so we could see the Space Needle being constructed from several of our classrooms. When it opened, our school loaded up us on school busses and we went to the fair. I loved the Science Center as I was into SciFi and there was an exhibit showing the relative weight of things on different planets and the moon. There was also a ride where you would go round and round and the floor would drop down and you would be held to the side of the ride via centrifugal force. Just like the astronauts.

In the early 1980s my sister gave me as a birthday present a pass to go up the Space Needle for myself and three other people an unlimited amount of times for a whole year. $20. When the pass expired, I renewed it for $25. Still a great deal lol.
