I knew it would be backed pedaled. The mayor was appeasing the protesters against STR’s for that moment to control the situation. No average family in West Maui wants a condo that has HOAs higher than the mortgage much less pay an exorbitant amount for a condo to begin with. A home?. The average family can’t afford that either. Only if they can hui the money and have 3 or more families live together. Investors are the ones that can afford most of the real estate. Those temporary ugly barrack type homes above Waihikuli will become permanent and look like ghetto sooner than you think.

I believe the uhero report is simply to provide information on how the removal of the short term rentals would affect our overall economy not if or if not afordable housing will be created

Owning property in Hawaii is different than here. Some laws are in effect that the state owns property will end in a few years. Just not up on it

I have met all the candidates. Those endorsed by the Chamber of Commerce and listed above are absolutely the best. Five of them are encumbents: Lee, Kama, Hodgins, Cook and Sugimura. Listening to Maui Council meeting about the Olowalu "temporary" toxic waste dump, they had no intention of using scientific advice from around the world. Dismissing every good idea that could solve the problem, not postpone a final outcome and harm the land and people in process. The mayor and county council are required to listen, but not to do the right thing. So very frustrating.

As an outsider, this revocation of the Minatoya list feels like revenge against perceived enemies of the housing crisis: STR owners. I do think there should be regulation to allow non-luxury real estate to be available to locals, but what's the reality of banning STR? Private equity firms buying up all the devalued properties. Luxury hotel groups coming in and buying up the ocean front properties and turning them in "residences" that they time share and rent out to their luxury clients-- in Kaanapali and Wailea. This feels like a short sighted "solution" that will backfire to a total corporate take over of these tourist areas. Flight against it, Maui! And get leadership that will allow affordable housing to be built and the economy to stay in tact. The Mayor is using The Kanaka Māori as blind for his corporate sell-out. That's clear to me. But what do I know, I just stay in hotels in Maui... a beautiful place and a beautiful people.

Sell and get out while you can! Fake real property market.
