I still remember when Mr. Castro at the age of 14 won the Jacksonville Jazz Festival piano competition I don’t think anyone has won over an audience so completely in the many years I’ve attended!

Thank you for this discussion. I have been playing "Troubled Water" since 1998, and I appreciate Dr. Thompson's thoughts and understanding of Margaret Bonds. These are discussions that need to be had, and expanded. The music of African American composers, both women and men, reflect the African American experience. The conversation regarding classical music and African Americans needs to be broadened and consistently addressed, and I count myself as one who continues to strive to keep the doors opened for inclusivity. I am older now, so I am thankful for another generation who is coming along to continue the work P.S. I play Perry's Homage as well. Beautiful!❤

Fabulous rendition. I have this peculiar preference, that one wouldn't think would matter, but I just love this played in F. It's not as though Bb is "wrong," & Oscar did later versions in Bb, so who can find fault w/ the composer himself? Still, Oscar just killed this in F, & that's the 1st version I had ever heard, so that's where it feels the most natural to me. This splendid rendition delivers the spirit of the piece just the same. He obviously likes it just fine in Bb. : ) Bravo!

I think this sounds like a virtuoso classical musician improvising and showing off his technique without any sense of blues or swing, in my opinion. It strikes me as a gloomy interpretation of what is a really beautiful and romantic standard tune, although there are moments of marvelous texture in the performance.
