I would say the best route is Durban to Lobatse border, Botswana via Rustenburg. Then, take Highay A2 all the way to Charles Hill border, Namibia. Then, towards Windhoek and Swakopmund to Hentiesbay. On the way back, you can go further to the end of Torra Bay. This route is really beautiful. it's offroad along the coast line with no services, you should extra gas and food with you. From Torra Bay to khorixas and then windhoek. It's the best route. Prefer to drive daytime. You need an extra Jerry Can for Gasoline. This route is pretty safe anyway.
