This is the dumbest thing I have ever heard Joy Division will be forgotten like all the other one hit wonders of the world, Ian's vocals are worse than Eddie Vedders, a mumbled mess probably the reason the band completely changed direction after he had that rope tightly embrace his neck.

The only thing masterful here is that sales pitch. Even had me going there for a moment. I love Unknown Pleasures, because it properly rebels agains trying to be good, and perfect. It's the anti-hero. It sounds serious but it's not. They sound like they have no idea what they are dong and just unwittingly expressing their emotions. Which might be true. The thing is, you have to put yourself in that era. You have to listen to what what else was playing during that time, prior to those times, even more so. Also, understanding that Ian's vocals were very much influenced by Jim Morrison. You can hear Bowie and punk rock in the writing style. It is insistently experimental and as a result, they shaped the future of much of what the 80s , 90s, and 2000s Alternative would sound like. But you would also benefit from getting into music they listed to when they were young. Really though, at first, I could not sit through "I Remember Nothing (About How to Sing)" but the terrible vocals on that track has made me appreciate other music so much more.

Rollins is such a wonderful ambassador for all sorts of music, film & art - he's got that gift (probably more of a skill he's honed over decades) of giving you enough background info & enthusiasm that it piques your own curiosity. He rarely if ever tells the audience how they should feel about a piece or artist, just gives them a place to start. That being said, I think he's swinging into hyperbole here equating JD (a great band) as legends on par w/Bowie and the Stones etc. If it got people checking them out, cool, but they were pretty much a one-trick pony and unfortunately we never got to hear them mature.

I couldve been a metalhead, but I looked up to my older brother who looked down at those guys- I think he just perceived them as stoners and low ambition people. He had some great punk records, so when I found those while playing his records (this is in the 80s), that was it for me. the fact that I ended up having social problems and anxiety when in school? Well that cemented it further. Punk was the refuge, and I can't extract it from my DNA even if I wanted to.

A band and album I found out about through my best friend. There mother forbade them from wearing the T-shirt or listening to them. From then on I was intrigued and subsequently hooked. Great description from Rollins.

You have to have 2 versions of this album first the full experience. The US version and Uk version has a war because of different mixes but the super important thing that always gets skipped over is that they each have songs not on the other and they are classic clash songs. Buy both on cd and then make the playlist you want for the ultimate clash debut album.

This is the album that in 2006 my math teacher in eighth grade who knew I loved skateboarding and music brough to me. I ripped every single track on to CD’s back then. I still have them and listen to them regularly 25+ years later as a 33 year old man now. Joy Division is my favorite band of all time. Spot on synopsis here.

This is interesting because if anyone should know about Monk it’s his son, right? The earliest Monk on record was as a member of Coleman Hawkins’ quartet. Blue Note may have been the first to give Monk his own record dates, but Hawkins, universally acknowledged as an all-time great saxophonist and improviser, was the earliest prominent jazz musician who championed Monk as both a pianist and composer and hired him for gigs (sometimes over the objections of club owners, who felt Monk played too “far out”) so the “mystery” of Blue Note recording him is somewhat less mysterious. Also, it’s curious that T. Monk the younger would cite “Evidence” as an example of Monk’s rejection of standard chord progressions since it is based on the harmony of the standard pop tune “Just You, Just Me”- it’s the rhythmic displacement and voicing of the melody of “Evidence” that is unusual and creative. I agree that Monk’s music had an overwhelming influence on what came after, and I love it and listen to it often.

rollins just described the way to learn something from. its when youre defnintely shaken by anything beyond your save milktoasty mindsets. if its gross it may informs you, and information isnt meant as news, its one part of the two way principle of semiotics: information and redundance.

There are many covers of Joy Division songs, and some truly amazing. The odd thing is that no matter how interesting the cover sounds it still lacks certain fragments of magic.
