In Tehachapi It usually takes another engine to help it start up. Very seldom see an engine shut off though. They will park one right outside my house and just idle for weeks!!

do locomotives need pony motors to start...i didn't hear one...but did see a lot of exhaust.

There are vids all over youtube where people will light a fire and hold it in front of the intake to get some heat to start the process, seems like an inexperienced operator, preparation of some sort to get heat in the intake should remedy long, painful startups

I had an old Chrysler that was grumpy in the morning too.

They should have the diesel mixed with transmission fluid from the fuel tanker that delivers to the train. Makes them run smoothly and easier to start in the cold.

Ive found when cold starting a 2 stroke (detroit 71 series in my case) its best to start it and then walk away for 15min so it warms up!!!

We lived near the tracks along the Wildwood Live Oak subdivision of SCL back in the 70s. U boats combined with SD-45 locomotives had a surging chug-a-lug sound you could hear and literally feel for miles as a train approached. When you combined the engine noises with the roar of the the entire train on riveted track, it was unmistakable. I sure do miss those sounds.
