You forgot to mention the predictability of story elements (5 minutes of our coffee talk that morning). The same risqué scenes over and over without anyone taking an actual risk.
@courtneyjensen4 күн бұрын
Oh, right. While off-the-cuffing, I forgot 90% of what we talked about. The point there being that "risk" usually means "original idea". And original ideas can't be algorithmically sorted. Tons of data on risque scenes though. To capture attention. And then recapture it whenever the algorithm decides it would be waning.

I feel where you're coming from, but I do believe there are a lot of movies that came out this year that are actually really remarkable works of art: The Substance, Love Lies Bleeding, I Saw The TV Glow, Y2K, Let's Start a Cult, and Nosferatu are all well-crafted, entertaining, and re-watchable examples of cinema in 2024. mostly horror, some comedy (which seems to be a rare genre in films nowadays). real rippers. they might not be the most popular movies in the world but they did come out this year. I choose to focus on the few amazing films that are released every year-- if you seek them out, you will be pleasantly surprised. but to your point, they are certainly not the top-grossing, widest-released ubiquitous films like a blockbuster from the 80s-2000s-- (though I think part of that is the nature of the internet age, there's less of the connection that was shared through relatively limited options, when there was 3 TV channels most people watchedthe same shows, when you can choose anything that's less often the case). that being said I must admit barbenheimer was quite the phenomenon this year and those were not bad movies.
@courtneyjensen5 күн бұрын
Very well said. I agree with all your points. My video was just my initial thoughts. Which I had just thought prior to hitting record. I think your comment adds an enormous amount to the conversation. So, again: very well said.

@ i appreciate the conversation!

One last compliment: In my experience, so few people are academically interested in any topic anymore. The only reason for engagement is hostility. Your comment, though. it was totally civil, and you justified every point effectively. And so I nodded in agreement to everything you said. In a way, it's similar to the architecture phenomenon. "They don't make buildings like they used to" is sort of true. But history's cheap buildings were all torn down. So they aren't available for comparison. I'm guessing movies are similar. Old movies with good structural integrity are the only ones still standing.
@mykeadelic5 күн бұрын
@@courtneyjensen i seriously appreciate that. i agree, often people are stuck thinking that the best has already happened. its like how they say everyone’s favorite snl cast is the cast when they were teenagers- its all relative. and people often get very personally offended instead of having the capacity to experiment with thought and explore new ideas with new people, whether it be in a casual internet comment section or a formal academic context. its a shame! but then again, it gives the revolutionaries a system to disrupt. and here we are sharing in delightfully civil discourse. i love that architecture metaphor, i totally agree. we are getting history’s greatest hits, not the totality of the reality of experiencing that year. if you look back at the last year or decade in retrospective, there are absolutely standout gems, whether it be in cinema, music, or other art forms! the internet gets a bad reputation but i’ve found it has restored my faith in the arts more often than it has destroyed my faith in humanity haha
@courtneyjensen5 күн бұрын
Now THAT is a fascinating topic. The SNL bit is a great observation, but it's your last sentence -- about the internet -- that I need to think more about. My immediate reaction is agreement. But I need to do some laps on the thought.
@kyleleroy61005 күн бұрын
I would take this more seriously if you named a single movie. Like was Oppenheimer made for the “TikTok” kids? Was Get Out? Are you taking about Red One? Name a movie.
@courtneyjensen5 күн бұрын
I appreciate your comment. And I certainly meant no offense. So please don't feel that you must interpret my off-the-cuff chat as a comprehensive, infallible declaration. But to address your comment directly, Red One was one of the movies we listed while making coffee. Oppenheimer wasn't. We finished that one. The exact roster of contemporary movies we tried to watch (and failed to finish) isn't really the point, though. A list of pop culture ephemera just outdates the topic. It would do more to subtract philosophy than add to it. That said, I do appreciate your comment and no offense is intended to anyone who watches. It's just an idea.

Here’s where this is relevant: When Andy Serkis portrays Gollum, he’s making every one of those facial expressions. Which means Gollum is a perfect avatar of Andy. But that’s not really how people operate their avatars today. While on their phones. Texting. And social mediaing. But I think we should. All of us. At least for one day each year: Thanksgiving.

Hi everyone. In the slideshow where you can see Lum and me painting... that was Lum's 27th birthday. It's the night we finished the painting. One of my favorite days. He had the wisdom to take a few pictures of us that night -- in addition to the painting -- realizing someday, we might want to look back on our time together as opposed to the product of it. I mean... we could have kept working on that canvas for months. We had a thousand more ideas of things to put on the bookshelf. But we ran out of time. So we finished it up in the wee hours of the night. Then we started another one (the smaller one). Which we could keep. But then I moved across the country and Lum moved across the world. Anyway, if you want some musical inspiration for your own art projects, you can find Lum's music projects (lots of them) at aaronlum.com

The tired, outdated iPad is a good metaphor for CFS/ME. I have to weigh up what is more important for me to do and allow myself rest beforehand and respite afterwards. It might just be a trip to the Drs but I’ll pay for it later. I spend the majority of my day/night in bed. The amount of ‘events’ I’ve missed because of Chronic Fatigue is insane; my best friend’s funeral memorial, weddings, christenings, theatre trips, concerts, appointments. Anything and everything has its toll. I have other health complications, many, which all have additional constraints. I think my CFS is a byproduct of some of these illnesses - depression, anxiety, CPTSD, under active thyroid, fibromyalgia, high BP, arrhythmia and tachycardia, fatty liver, asthma, pre diabetes and CKD. Which all leave me in a Catch 22 scenario… I can’t exercise efficiently as I have disc degeneration and sciatica, heart and BP problems and CFS, yet, exercise would provide me with serotonin, weight loss and help my battle with my MH. The amount of medication I’m on is actually crazy and they all have side effects too. People don’t empathise with invisible disability. You’re seen as a malingerer or it’s taken personally. The amount of referrals I’ve had to cancel because of my CFS is crazy, it turns into groundhogs day. It also affects smaller matters such as paperwork and telephone calls… should be easy right? But no. If I get out of bed, clean a little, let the dogs out and make a phone call then I’ve had a good day, I won’t have got washed and dressed tho because that is a task in itself.
@courtneyjensen6 ай бұрын
I share many of the ailments and all of the sentiments. Especially about people's perceptions. Every time I record one of these, I have to spend the rest of the day in bed. And the next day, I'm operating at 70%. (So I end up spending pretty much that whole day in bed too.) You know the feeling. Most people don't. So they call it things like "malingering" as opposed to suffering. Or they perceive one's suffering as "self-centered"... even though they (we) are doing the best we can. I'm gradually learning how to ignore people's hostility. Not excuse it, though. Because imagine the social backlash they would experience if they were berating someone with a condition people widely understood, like Down syndrome or Alzheimer's. Or telling someone in a wheelchair they were malingering and unwilling to work because their chair couldn't access the workplace. That's the same thing. Insulting people with disabilities who are doing everything they can with the resources they have. Society just hasn't reached a point where that's understood. Anyway............ this is me sending understanding your way. Not understanding for EVERYTHING that you've been through (and continue to endure), but parts of it.

I looked at your KZbin play list. A soul is kindred here. I have concert shirts of a lot of those bands. From years ago. I'm not healthy enough to go to concerts anymore. At least not without being bedridden and braindead for a week. I've done some research on CFS-ME -- like this: journals.lww.com/acsm-msse/fulltext/2023/09001/patients_with_myalgic_encephalomyelitis_have.353.aspx (and one on Lyme and one on fibromyalgia) -- but studying problems I have (ME and fibromyalgia, but not lyme) just exacerbates my anxiety about it. Anyway.... I know the feeling of bearing unfair cross weight. We have a lot of overlapping problems. Beyond the crippling fatigue. I'll try to get some more "in sickness" videos recorded. Haven't done one in a little while. For the most part, they just offend people who work in healthcare. And people who don't understand illness. So I haven't been motivated lately. But I appreciate the encouragement.
