I tihnk Sicily is probably one of the lest expensive places to live in Europe. but the basic idea... yeah. more important and harder to quantify is the quality of life.

I'm as you could say dirt poor. Internet per month is 23€ I have only bough water few times in a year, 'cos it is free in a tab. This is one of the most expensive countries in the world, or so I have told. My living expenses are about 800€ per month (9600€/y). I don't have a car, I bicycle everywhere around the year.Only thing that worries is the electricity. In wintertime, it has made people rethink the usage of the electricity, 'cos they are bankrupted for the bills. The country I live in is Finland.

I had a tour in the Lichtenstein Castle. The reason for it to be on the massive cliff, was for defensive purposes and view. There you could already see MILES away an attacking army, and beeing so high up, it was very difficult to attack / easy to defend.

Well , i am German and work 1 day a week since 12 years . Thats 8h a week with 6 weeks ( = 6 Days) vaccation = ~10 000 Euro / 11 000 Dollar . Thats not enough but i worked full Time before and had a little luck at the stock exchange = my money works the rest of the week for me with ~ 5000 Euro in Dividends and 5000 - 10 000 in profit sharing from Investment Fonds . My House is payed , my Car is payed , its enough for me . If i retire i will get a pension , it will be a bit lower but i guess it will be still higher than my current wage . It simply depends where you live , big Cities are expensive with 350 000 - 500 000 ( or more) for a House and in rural areas you easily find Houses for 100 000 - 150 000 Euro ( in need of renovation , modernisation ) or 175 000 - 200 000 for those in better condition and not so old .

America is laughably expensive. Self evidently over valued. Crappy houses made out of matchwood. Atrocious food made out of sugar, salt and additives. Postal costs make exporting wholly impossible (just check out how China does it, and still makes a healthy profit). America is no example of successful capitalism, with enormous gulfs between the 'haves' and the 'have nots', and they wonder why ever less voters feel empowered or believe their vote makes a difference. Like the Roman Empire, it stares destruction and impotence in the maw, yet has no concept of it's failings.

Actually, come to think of it, I’ve made that same mistake once. _Once._ In my defense, I was in Norway, not Italy, I’m not Norwegian, and the friends I was hanging out with were French, German, Swedish - so we were speaking English (go figure). So, yeah, the Italian street food vendor gave me a really dirty look for my mistake, and, fearing for my pasta, I summoned all of my Italian language skills to apologize. Skills which are about as non-existent as my Spanish skills so I have no idea why I mixed up in the first place.

Yeah, urban (not as in "urban", but as people living in metro areas in general) Amercans seems to have gotten the shaft for the past 20 years. I live just outside Stockholm Sweden, a quite expensive city in a quite expensive country, and makes roughly 50K USD/year before taxes (roughly 38K after, though I have to point out here that the conversion rate greatly disfavour my earnings here, since the Swedish Krona is historically weak against the USD right now) and I have yearly costs of about 18K/year. Though I live small, I do live in an extremly in demand area just about 10 minutes from the city center by metro, train or car. Not everyone here can live as cheap as I do, my rent is low since my house is 100 years old and the mortage the landlord/developer had was paid of ages ago and that in turn reflects on the low rent, I own a car but barly use it since I have excellent access to public transport (and the gas is like 8-9 dollars/gallon here so y'know, don't drive if you don't have to) but do eat out a lot. Still, my total expenses are roughly 18K/year and I could probably lower that if I cooked a bit more at home.

100 dollars is fucking wild for internet wtf hahahah. Check out grocery price comparisons between the UK and the USA. Theres popular videos by Evan Edinger and Magenta Otter Travels, theyre americans and do decent video comparisons. I went to the usa like 10 years ago and nearly cried at the prices, a box of cornflakes cost me $4 for a normal sized one when im not joking im used to these costing £1 for the branded cornflakes then like 0.29p for the store version which btw our store brand products selection is like 1000x what available in the usa, you dont need to buy brands.

In the UK i can easily live on £1500 a month. I pay £500 a month in rent for a 2 bedroom apartment (would be more like £750 today but my landlord is chill), internet is like £25 for gigabit, phone is £10. My total bills monthly are less than £1000 total then add food and recreation and travel. I have 0 debt at all. No uni debt because i went to scotland, the concept of medical debt doesnt exist in the uk at all, it doesnt exist. My full time work week is 30 hours and i get 35 days off per year. I earn about 30k per year which sounds low but i mean i just dont need more money. I travel to spain, turkey, greece etc 5+ times per year because in the uk we have bank holidays which means you can often get a 4 day weekend so a lot of us just get a cheap flight to spain. Like i can get flights for as low as literally £9.99 to a bunch of places in europe, we also have 'city break' packages. An all inclusive family holiday in spain for a week for 5 people can be as cheap as £300-500. I drive a diesel 2011 skoda octavia (cost £750) and a petrol 2013 Nissan QashQai (£1000) my insurance is about £500 per year, petrol and diesel are about $7 a gallon which sucks but remember everything is closer in europe haha and my diesel skoda gets 55mpg easy on the motorway and the nissan gets about 35-40mpg. Quite a lot of us do have cars in europe btw you just dont need them for work or transport, theres 400 million cars in the EU compared to 300 something million in the usa.

It's worth mentioning that Sicily is relatively poor, with high unemployment etc. That, of course, is reflected in housing prices. Grocery prices vary widely between European countrys. In Scandinavia, for example, you can easily double the prices mentioned here, if not more. Especially in my country, Norway. Utilities, like water supply, electricity etc. isn't that bad, although electricity has gone up a lot over the last few years. I'm surprised that internet connection is so crazy expensive in the US. With prices like that there must be people who can't afford internet connection in the US, which is basically unheard of here in Norway.

New series idea: American Reacts to himself living in Europe? Also, she is living it large in Siciliy, I stayed there for few months, spent like 100$ on rent, 50$ on utilities, 150$ on food a month. That was of course pre covid, around 2020. But there's plenty of very accomodating and much cheaper places in Europe. Actually places like Germany etc. you can do groceries SUPER CHEAP, even though the countries are well off economically. Rent and living in Germany outside of Berlin etc. is still super cheap. You can get 3 bedroom apartment in a smaller city for 400$ a month with utilities included lol.

I am German and I am preparing to retire in Hungary near Lake Balaton. I bought a house some years ago when it was much cheaper than now. Groceries are surprisingly more expensive than in Germany but utilities are cheaper. My house has a big garden of about 2000 square metres snd I already started to garden there. For me and my wife 18000 Eura a year will secure a good living. The language us a bit of a problem but Vienna is just a 2 hours drive or 3 hours train ride away and i have family there.

A common form of reverse culture shock for US expats can be rapid weight gain and feeling unwell due to the decidedly toxic food permitted by the FDA - easily fixed by going back to somewhere with more robust regulations that are strictly enforced. Overwhelmingly, US companies can and do make versions of their products that are safe to eat but only for foreign markets - its cheaper and more profitable to sell the unsafe stuff to domestic customers and pay off congress if anyone tries to tighten up standards.

Here in Sweden, we pay 30 % in taxes from our sallery but the medical care is pretty cheap and subsidised by the government. A visit to the ER cost about $40 and to stay in the hospital cost $13 a day and and when the costs go over $140 after that high-cost protection kicks in then it's for free. Same for the medication. All health care including dental under the age of 20 is free in Sweden. Moved from the U.S. over 35 years ago to Sweden and never regret it. Been having a ball here and just recently renounce my American citizenship to avoid the double taxation. Have no plans to me back to America ever again. .

Generally in the UK you have E10 (95 octane) and E5 (97+). If you want 100+ you're looking at 'super' fuels like Shell V-Power. The US surpresses domestic fuel prices to an incredible degree due to it being so car-based, in Europe prices are generally kept high if only to encourage people not to have cars and reduce pollution (as well as for governments to make bank on tax).

lower league teams (in the UK) can make millions from a good cup run, teams get a percentage of gate and tv money, so if a lower league team plays at a premier league teams ground and its on tv they can get a fat pay cheque, even more if they draw and get a replay, but that's coming to an end soon

You need to know that Sicily and the southern end of the Italian boot are the poorest regions in Italy. The more north you go, the more expensive things get, and also the better payed the jobs are. Sure, if you make your money on YT or some remote work, its great to live there. But for the locals its not that easy, unemployment is high, wages are low. Thats why many people (especially in rural regions) have left and moved to the cities in the north. Or even other countries, like Germany or France or so. Its similar in many places in Europe, what are basically gems of beauty - but difficult to live in for the local population. You find that in Portugal, Spain, Greece, Croatia ect. If you have money you can live there like a king. And quite a number of people do that.
