Hi! Im a beginner and plan on getting Tetramorium immigrans (Pavement Ants) and I need them to have some sort of heat gradient. Once they are in there out world and nest, where would I put the heat mat? And also how long would I have it on there? TIA

what i do is mix fine sand with coco fiber then paint a side with it and it stays there like that. your brood will have better survival rates.

what if you dont have any sand in the test tube?, will it be just fine for the trapjaw queen ant?
@marcusbullock6302 ай бұрын
they require soil because part of their behavior is to stick the larvae to the wall using its spikes. its needed for them to form a cocoon

A heating cable 15 watt would help a lot ☝️ But make sure it is not nearby the water side of the test tube

Hat bro, I have a question for you of that's okay. I have 2 large colonys of Floridanus C colonys. Like 500 plus workers an majors. Will you large ant nest on your site work for them? I need to keep them from climbing out. I've been having a hard time with them escaping.

It's criminal how under viewed this channel is, especially when compared to the clickbait scripted content certain other keepers churn out on a weekly basis. I love the no nonsense, practical approach to keeping you have. As such I'm going to begin dropping your name into a few UK ant keeping groups, because good advice needs to be shared so our hobby can thrive. Speaking of which, a great idea when it comes to "vacuuming up" escapees from species like Lasius or Myrmica, is to use a cotton swab, (or cotton bud in the UK), and tease some of the wool away from the end of the stick until it slightly resembles candyfloss. Works every time, and you're less likely to lose the odd unfortunate who gets his jaws wrapped in the cotton ball.

Maybe the time it took to move the boosted brood into the nest and the adopting nest to get enough food for them led to a dietary trigger to prematurely produce alates?

People, please be aware that this light and disturbance 'study' has serious faults. Your results may very. There's plenty of other 'studies' on YT that indicate that keeping ants in the light have no impact on them....ants england review of the Wakooshi Saturn comes to mind.

Have you considered offering the out worlds with plugs as a item to sell. Great piece of gear for a tube and tub set up. Plug the holes and barrier around the top add founding test tube with queen and first workers / brood . A more cost effective option to offer as a bare bones starter for a nice $$.
@Reshtarc9 ай бұрын
My veromessor andrei are still in the tube and the tube is in their outworld. aka tube n tub set up. will connect the rest of the nest when they grow large enough to need something other than a tube in tub...err outworld of my vortex nest starter kit.

you can make a 'moat' of dish soap and water by placing a pan into a larger pan and fill the large pan with about an inch or so of the water soap mix. this removes surface tension and makes any insect that contacts the water sink and drown rapidly.

Question:::::: Starting test tube set ups are for when the queen is new and she is full on wing muscle to feed her young. I got 3 queens now in December all their brood have failed. I could use a guide on how to keep them alive feeding and needs to help her get to spring so she will restart laying and try to build brood pile again. This is a Huge challenge for a novice ant keeper. I see zero guides on this subject just how to keep new queens. Well what about the ones that are not new but still in the box so to speak. How to care for them to get to year 2 and a real founding? This is my question as i hope my queens do not die before spring

Thanks i needed this i just found a trap jaw queen but i have 1 question does it have to be live?
@Reshtarc10 ай бұрын
Late but my ideal . Run a tube outside to an outworld you set up . one you can open to the sky if they start to swarm for a nuptial flight. that way you keep your girls and let the others out. and your girls can taste the outside so the know when the time is right. But you would have to keep close watch for when the do to open the roof to the out world. escape barrier the out world and let them fly.

What is the difference between Camponotus decipiens and discolor? The difference between these two is that Discolor has "conspicuous suberect to erect hairs on the malar area" (Joe A. MacGown), whereas decipiens does not. They got beards or not? Only way to tell if you have the true ant discolor. Just a fun tip something to look for.
