Imola and Enna in the 1960s were slipstream circuits and even on the public record drivers like Joe Siffert and Trevor Taylor could rival clark on that sort of circuit. Motor Racing in the 1960s was an amatuer sport and I think the money and the girls were largely uniterested from the time Von Trips died in an accident with Clark in 61, till Servoz Gavin, Ickx, Ridnt and Rodriquez started to fire in 1968. Clark isn't interesting and sexy, in the 1960s it was about rock and roll, drugs and Nam.

He was also missing all the oil from his transmission (having bashed it into the fence), which is what caused Prost to wipe out in the first place! He was still classified 6th, so, better than nothing!

These were ground effects cars. The whole car essentially acted like a giant wing.

You're kidding, aren't you? "It is surprising just how safe those cars were" ?!? Warwick and Tambay made contact in that race in a first gear corner and the both broke their legs. Carbonfibre alone doesn't cover. And there were a lot of almost-fatal accidents with severe consequences for the drivers between Monaco 84 and Imola 94, e.g. Brundle 84 at Dallas, Cecotto 84 at Brands Hatch, Laffite 86 at Brands Hatch, Streiff 89 at Jacarepagua, Donnelly 90 at Jerez, Lehto 94 at Silverstone.

Monaco GP 1996 was even more dramatic with only 3 cars running after the chequered flag and Olivier Panis took his one and only F1 victory :)

One of the things that I always find amazing about this coverage is that neither commentator noticed that Derek Daly was missing his rear wing. they mention his front, but not the rear!

I ripped it from an old VHS tape that my brother recorded at home, maybe when this film was rebroadcasted by spanish TV1 back in 1991 when the 1st GP at Montmeló took place (this race was recorded in the same tape). a few years ago, me and my brother ripped our big collection of grands prix VHS tapes, from ±1989-2000 seasons. we found also some other films, like this one. thx for watching :)

I have this review and I have to say its the most watched of all the reviews I have. I cried with laughter watching it the first time. I have to add that he did know a lot about F1 as well and the tragic moments he covered with great grace and respect. After all, there were a lot in 1982. F1 needed fun in this season, otherwise it would've been a very sad review.

1982 is a year very crazy in f1;2 dieds(villeneuve and palletti);strike action of pilots in south africa;of teams in san marino,victories of pilots mediums(patrese in monaco,tambay in germany,de angelis in austria)the champion is winner only one race(rosberg),runner up racing half season(pironi) and fittipaldi ford crash
@220641141113 жыл бұрын
@rmrvideos It is surprising just how safe those cars were. de Angelis died in a testing accident in France, but I do not recall any fatalities besides that (and very few serious injuries) right the way up to the mid 90s when Ratzenburger and Senna died. The cars were to get a lot safer, certainly, though I'm not convinced that more recent innovations (the refuelling era, limiting the replacement of tyres and other safety-critical components, etc) helped.

@TheColinChapman it was an electrical problem, the team put in a battery which wasn't fully charged...it was written about in the press at the time but if you want confirmation read Autosport's recent 50th anniversary Ferrari special (I'm pretty sure it's Autosport's celebration) and/or Christopher Hilton's superb book 1982: The Inside Story of the Sensational Grand Prix Season.

@hugodrax71 I interesting - always thought he ran out of fuel. Where do you have the evidence for his electrical problem? I'd like to know that in detail.

Heard of the story when Bernie Ecclestone was watching this race? He was still the head supremo at Brabham and overjoyed that Prost was out and his driver Patrese was going to win it. When Patrese spun out, Ecclestone got furious and thought "well, there goes the race win!!", immediately left and drove to the airport. When he landed home in England, they congratulated him for the win in the Monaco GP. He was surprised to hear what had happened when he had left, and that Patrese DID win afterall

@bubi8894 they had so much ground effect under the cars, front wings weren't needed it was discovered that the front wings disturbed the air going into the venturi tunnels, and therefore made more damage than good, hence they were removed 1982 was the last year for ground effect. From 1983 onwards it was banned. Therefore they put the wings back on in the front.
