One of life’s mysteries is why The Go-Betweens weren’t more successful.

It's actually not that much of mystery why they weren't successful. At the very point they reached their point of breakthrough, Robert Foster and Grant McLennan ended the band. Amanda Brown and Lindy Morrison were very upset. When they finally reunited in 2000, Robert and Grant acted like Lindy and Amanda never existed.

@@haikumcewan9164 oh right, didn’t know any of this - that’s sort of disappointing, however, their music endures and strangely after all these years, still sounds fresh and optimistic. No other group captures the spirit of Australia like them.

@@haikumcewan9164 I'm almost in agree with you. Yes, they broke up at their peak (artistic peak and popularity peak), but they were never successful. They tried to get more recognition by moving to London, but even that wouldn't work. There's a couple of biographies that show how badly they suffered in terms of money and how poor the conditions were on their tours. They're my favorite band ever. They have plenty of marvelous songs. They have the best pop songs with some of the best lyrics ever. My verdict is that they were too good for this world.

Have lived through the decades when this musical group was active; have listened to their songs and have viewed very candid interviews and documentaries about The Go-Betweens. Despite a reasonably well-sized output of songs, very few of their singles or albums achieved a ranking inside the top 50 in Australia. Music critics and fans of the band will proffer various reasons as to why this band never achieved success (success being measured in terms of units of music sold, ratings of specific songs/albums, amount of money earned, quality of musicianship and popularity). My observation is that this group failed to achieve much when measured by the above. Honestly, how they survived for so long is about the most interesting aspect of their playing existence. In interviews they candidly refer to not being able to afford food to eat! Frankly, I find much of their work bland, almost trite. And so many of their songs are virtually non-melodic hence inducing a certain boredom about their work. They didn't make many TV appearances (part explanation for their lack of commercial success) and probably TV producers saw no reason to showcase such an ordinary group. And hearing the group's members giving explanations for their lack of success does them no favours at all. Pretentiousness seems a cover for their lack of talent. As a musician myself I don't enjoy being harshly critical of people who try to express creativity through music but despite attempts to be more positive this group leaves me cold - they were no better than your average garage band but for some reason, record companies were still prepared to sign them on. Go figure as one says!

Well it's all subjective isn't it? That's the joy of creative art. And knowing that the band I appreciate weren't appreciated by the masses makes it feel closer to me. Go figure...

Hi John, your take on the GeeBees fascinates me because everything you say about them is very, very true-the borderline garage band quality of a considerable proportion of their work, the pretension, the variable success of the lyrics and sometime melodic inanity-yet I nonetheless return fondly to some of it. Maybe it’s got something to do with the bits that did work working very well, if only intermittently like pearls in mud. Some of their lyrics and even their turgid melodic structures, like the Clarke Sisters, are evocative of times and places in the way, say, the Triffids’ Bury Me Deep in Love is, and it’s these sad stories and phrases and feelings that stay with me, e.g., the clarinet and the line “take your shoes and go outside . . .” in Bye Bye Pride. They’re like those deja vu moments you’d have as a child, or as an adult recalling early memories-I’d compare these narrative jetsam to the best lines Neil Finn writes. I suppose then it’s something to do with those rare confluences of narrative lyric and melody that I can’t shake, even while the passive-aggressive ABBA domestic infighting, the soho poseur’s diarising, and the multiple mediocre solo albums from Germany are just all very silly.
