I can confirm the conclusions in the video. It appears that there are quality control issues with the Leica 12-60. The copy I tested was clearly less sharp than my battered 14-140 f3.5. But I'm sure that a good copy of the Leica 12-60 should be slightly better than the 14-140. On top of that, I compared my 14-140 with a Leica 8-18 and Leica 35-100 and the results from the kit superzoom were surpisingly close to the premium lenses in terms of sharpness. Sure, the Leica-branded lenses appear to have a special rendering but maybe that's just me seeing things in an attempt to justify the purchases.

The Leica is definitely sharper, although you've probably also ended up with a sharper copy of the Lumix 14-140, as from what I've read Panasonic has a lot of trouble maintaining consistent lens quality.

I agree with you. I have 14-140 ii and 12-35 2.8 ii and the 14-140ii is more sharpness from 14mm to 35mm but it has more chromatic aberration. In my opinion 14-140 ii is one of the best travel zoom that I have used.

Thanks for this video. What are my thoughts ? 1. Well the 14-140 f3.5-56 is a much better lens than my 14-140 f4-5.8. 2. Watching the video on a calibrated display shows some differences. The Lumix has slightly more contrast, more saturated colours and warmer tones. These features make a very pleasant kit lens for average photographers. The Leica pictures has a softer look and more natural, more suitable for portrait. It does not mean the Leica is not as sharp as the Lumix but is has the Leica look. I have the 45mm f2.8 macro Leica which has this look: soft but sharp .

I’ve got two 14-140 lenses and they are my grab and go lenses and am very happy with them. Had both for over eight years so mine are not splash proof. When I want a wider view I change lenses for either the heavy Oly Pro 7-14 f2.8 or the 12-32 kit compact lens which is amazingly sharp but has no manual focus ring. The 14-140 is compact and lightweight so goes well with even my GX80 camera. It is a stark contract in weight, size and sharpness to the equivalent full frame Sony 28-280 lens which I hardly ever use on my Sony A7III

Yes, I agree. At the time the video was made (more than 3 years ago), the near/far focusing feature had just been added through the firmware update, and I had not yet set up the camera to fully take advantage of this feature. I now use it, and it does help somewhat.

I agree that is not my definition of freezeproof. But that information is according to the manufacturer's specs sheet and that is their definition of freezeproof. I thought it might interest potential buyers to know that what freezproof means in the eye of the manufacturer. Cheers
@pioni22 жыл бұрын
@@PaulBawby I've observed that weather sealing is more important than being "freezeproof" (or whatever manufacturers think that might be). The thing that has killed lesser cameras, such as the poor Sony (which I still have somewhere), is condensing water when one comes back inside. The Sony died 3 times under warranty, and the last time they "fixed it", it came back as something that drains batteries really, really, really quickly, even when not in use. Another thing is the melting ice on my face and beard that drops straight on the camera if it is hanging on my neck. When it's -30 C outside, I use mechanical film cameras only because the batteries would die anyway. I know there are better modern ones than I have, but I'm not keen on using the top-of-the-line models because of their weight. My current "top" camera is the Leica SL2, which can handle any weather, but the body and its lenses are horribly heavy. Currently, I'm looking for a 2nd hand MFT camera and 1-2 lenses for a more pocketable system when my back hurts too much to carry around the gear I would like to. I am still deciding which way to go, as there are too many choices in the MFT world. The exciting thing is that there are Leica-branded lenses (not made by Leica, obviously) for MFT cameras. Also, for MFT, I would finally get a 500-600mm equivalent lens for nature photos and still be able to haul the gear around. I don't have a car either, so it's all going on foot or by bicycle. I'm not worried that MFT might not be around in the future, as I'm old enough to not be around either. Also, I always buy everything 2nd hand.

there is a doe and a semi grown up fawn that are at my local forest that i was photographing. they both spotted me because is it such a small forest and the doe stared at me for a few minutes and then started to approach me, becides if the deer is showing clear body language or noises that make me think she is mad or agitated do you think it’s ok to stay where i am and let the deer get closer and be curious, it’s a hard decision because i think it would be a cool experience for her to get close but i don’t want to accidentally startle her and i really don’t want to make her mad. shes used to people and noise i’m sure so i’m not worrying too much. what do you think?
@PaulBawby2 жыл бұрын
Good question, it's my general experience that if the deer doesn't run away or even gets closer it's because they're ignorant of your presence (noise and wind direction are an important factors) or that they're somewhat habituated to some level of human presence and are comfortable with the situation. It's also my general experience that if a doe is startled or scared, it won't get "mad" it will just run away. I hope this is useful and I wish you best of luck with your photography.

Hi, I'm currently using a panasonic fz300, but I would switch to a g9+100-300 power ois re. How much better do you think this equipment would perform than the bridge? (I photograph forest animals, not birds)
@PaulBawby2 жыл бұрын
Hi, This is a very good question. Even though I have used several bridge cameras over the years I don't recall using the FZ300, so it would be hard for me to compare them. The G9 came out 4 years ago and back then it did introduce some nice features that made it, in my opinion, a better camera for wildlife photography than the GH5 and comparable Olympus models. This having been said, in the last four years a lot has changed in the mirrorless camera market. Sony and Canon have introduced some great cameras with bird/animal eye detect autofocus (AF) that are very significantly better than the animal detect AF features Panasonic has introduced with a firmware update for the G9. So even though the G9 is a fine all around camera the very ordinary performance (by today's standards) of its contrast based bird/animal detect AF makes it a less desirable for animal photography in today's market. I'm currently testing out newer options from competitors and will eventually be releasing a video with my thoughts on the subject. Of course everybody's needs, wants and budget are different so what is right for one person might not always right for others. I hope you find this useful. Cheers

Great video. I am glad to see someone posting great images with their MFT system. I personally have the Sony A7R3 with the 100-400 and 1.4 TC. For the past few years we go on 2-3 hour bike rides and hikes, and it has gotten old carrying it around. I bought the Lumix 100-300 and G9 and what a difference in weight and portability. The IQ is not AS good, but it is definitely acceptable and I would much rather be comfortable and look forward to my long outings with a lightweight system and be happy with the results. The dual IS is literally the best out there. I have tried Olympus and Sony, and they pale in comparison. And with the G9's firmware upgrade and being able to record high output video, there is really no reason not to get this combo at its price. Especially if you can get them used like I did. I got the two for less than half the price of my Sony lens. My two cents. Thanks for the video!

I wonder how did you nail exposure in the last moon photo.... It was great
@PaulBawby2 жыл бұрын
Hi, great question. Getting the exposure right in one shot when it's a moonlit landscape requires combining at least two shots, one correctly exposed for the moon and one correctly exposed for the landscape. In the case of the photo in my video I was driving back after an exhausting hike when out of the corner of my eye I saw what could be a pleasing composition. I had to find a safe parking spot, change lens, climb a small hill and hurry to frame the composition because the moon was rising fast and the sun was setting fast as well. Fortunately the setting sun was still casting enough light for the landscape to be somewhat lit. I chose to expose for the moon because it was, in my mind, the main subject and because I didn't want to be loosing details of the moon surface. I also knew I could always bring back the shadows somewhat in post. I hope this information is useful. Cheers

Thank you for your review. I currently own the 100-300mm LUMIX lens but I just ordered the Leica 100-400mm and it’s being delivered tomorrow! (No camera shops near me carry the Micro 4/3’rd systems. I am going to Africa next month, and it’s probably a once in a lifetime trip, so I wanted the best chance for some quality pictures. I have taken some really nice photographs with the 100-300mm so if the price and/or size is important to you, I can recommend it. I did like the length of your review.

Hi Paul, Thanks for the Winter tips, since I come from a cold climate too, it comes in very handy. I just recently acquired a second hand Leica 100-400 lens. I have been shoot with it for the last week. I noticed on your photos you tend to keep your ISO as low as possible. I have been shooting at a higher shutter speed 500 and above at the expense of an higher ISO like 1600. I do have to use DXO and Topaz software to bring down the noise. Do you do much post processing on your images. Thanks, Leo
@PaulBawby2 жыл бұрын
Hi Leo, I'm old school, I try to "get it right in camera" as much as possible. I generally shoot in "manual" for shutter speed and aperture and set my ISO to auto, but I always keep an eye on my ISO value and if possible adjust the speed to try and keep the ISO as low as reasonably possible. I do some post processing, mostly in Lightroom, but when using the photos for my videos I try to keep it to a minimum because I'm trying to showcase the capabilities and limits of the gear not my post processing "talents"... Cheers
