Could I become an RN as I'm in the Navy? I'm considering joining the Navy and my dream is to be an RN.

jim bob Thanks for your comment/question. The answer the comes to mind is why not? Is there a recruiter or CO you could speak to that could help you learn more about your specific options? It is an officer career track so that must be part of your current or future plans, but if you can qualify for that path and the school application process, I can't imagine why the Navy would not allow it.

Great Video. It is my desire to care for Veterans because i can really enter into their world and feel their deep pains. My husband is considering if doing a Navy Nursing Job on a part time basis will be suitable for our family. Considering we have a Ministry and a company we just registered, it might not be possible. However, we are praying about it. We will know in about 90 days.

Can you be a guy and a nurse?

***** Not very funny. There are countless professional male nurses in the USA and all over the world. Quite a few male medics have returned from their service in the military as corpsmen or medics to train and work as RNs and other types of nurses. Please be respectful.

***** Then please accept my sincere apology. I'm very glad you took the time to reply back and explain your comment. I hope you can see how I might have thought it was a bit sarcastic? I'm not a spokesperson for the US Navy, but given how enlisted women are now being brought aboard submarines, I'd be very surprised if males could not serve as nurses in 2015. They certainly do serve as corpsman (medics). That is an excellent question to put to your local US Navy recruiter or ROTC representative. As far as I know, all serving Navy nurses are officers with college degrees (just so my enlisted comment about submarines does not confuse the issue). Again, I appreciate you taking the time to explain and hopefully understand why I misunderstood you. :(

MRSA is still a huge problem in hospitals years after this video was produced (2009). Clearly much work remains to be done to stop the spread.

MRSA is a constant source of trouble in the health care environment. This video from our early days describes one source from EMS stethoscopes and suggested methods of control. #nurse #mrsa #ems #paramedic #emergencymedicine #er #stethoscope #ambulance #rn #healthcare #hospital

In times of crisis, people depend on ambulances and emergency vehicles to be clean and safe, yet they are often transmitters of bacteria and viruses that compound an already trying situation. But emergency medical systems teams are constantly faced with the challenge of preventing infection transmission. The emergence of antimicrobial-resistant microbes (e.g., healthcare-acquired and community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus [MRSA], vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus [VRE] and multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacilli), along with growing concern regarding the spread of Clostridia difficile bacteria are problems facing all healthcare providers. A major challenge for EMS is the broad range of potentially transmissible infections, including the above pathogens and others that may be recognized or unrecognized when transporting patients. In December 1991, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) issued a standard titled “Occupational Exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens.” The OSHA BBP rule applies to all persons occupationally exposed to blood and other potentially infectious materials. According to OSHA, All equipment and environmental working surfaces must be cleaned and decontaminated with an appropriate disinfectant after contact with blood and other potentially infectious materials.” One of the requirements under the standard is ensuring that each place of employment be kept clean and sanitary. This involves development and implementation of protocols and procedures addressing work practices for employees that include cleaning schedules and appropriate methods of decontamination and disinfection. All equipment and environmental working surfaces must be cleaned and decontaminated with an appropriate disinfectant after contact with blood and other potentially infectious materials. In February 1997, OSHA amended its sanitization policy and stated that EPA-registered disinfectants that are labeled as effective against HIV and HBV are appropriate disinfectants, as well as EPA-registered disinfectants for bloodborne pathogens. Sanitary EMS vehicles play a critical role in reducing the transmission of harmful pathogens, helping to protect employees and patients alike. Level4 Bio offers a safe and effective solution for sanitizing EMS vehicles to help mitigate the risk

Medic1025 - if your question was directed to us - we did not conduct the study (nor do we conduct such research) that is the subject of this news video. It is simply a video that is news about that study. We are a website about and for nurses with thousands of free nurse job listings and the study is of interest to them so we reported on it. According to the study's author finding MRSA on EMS 'scopes was new and the rate of cleaning was surprising and new. I agreed with Mickey2050 as well.

Hi Mickey, thanks for watching and your comment. I don't think the point of the study or this video was to single out the EMS folks. It was just a surprising new data point in the effort to control and eliminate MRSA. Your point about swab testing nurse's and doctor's (my addition) stethoscopes is an interesting one worth looking into for sure.
