I think that this simulation shows that everyone knows which lane to take to reach their destination. In other words, all drivers are driving optimally. However, realistically, that's not true, especially in the complex intersections that are presented in this video (like the Turbo Roundabout). It's likely for a driver to miss the lane that leads to the route they want to follow. When they realize that they missed the lane, they might slow down a little bit, which will cause congestion. After a while, people would learn the routes even if they're somehow complex. But there would still be a small percentage of these cars representing people who have never been into this intersection, and people who passed this intersection but never took that route for example. In a more realistic simulation, I'd try to simulate how humans drive and behave, and I'd try to consider this small fraction. Another metric that I find very useful in this simulation would be the distribution of wait time. The traffic you've measured is the throughput, but you can have 800 cars per minute even though one of the cars at one of the lanes has been waiting for 2 minutes. So the distribution of waiting time would be another metric to show.

Basically It goes from the roadway design of a developing country with chaotic traffic lighting to European with roundabouts everywhere to US freeway with stack interchanges every 10 miles.
@kingprone7846Ай бұрын
the most interesting thing is how little efficiency is gained compared to an intersection with just traffic lights..... It hardly seems worth it to construct such big highway intersections and its almost like its better off to just construct roads without intersections. That said.... as we only see the intersection it doesnt take the speed driven into account. I.e. driving 150km/h on the highway is obviously adding to traffic flow.

well I personally like the standard cloverleaf (I am lazy) but somehow made the contraflow, and yeah, I feel sick even making the stacked interchange, wasted 2 days and still couldn't figure out how and from where to make the turns.

This is really interesting but counting the amount of money it would cost on average, which one is the most efficient? Since most of them look pretty costly and need a lot of space

I think it depends where you plan on placing the junction. The less traffic on average the smaller options are best

Does your modeling include the frequency of traffic accidents with their resulting slowdowns? Because without accounting for that element, your modeling is necessarily inaccurate.

@DDB-np1jp5 ай бұрын
Obviously the last ones allow the most flow ending with the one with biggest flow the Stack Interchange. But you need three very important things for such structures to become reality: Space, without the additional space needed, nothing can be built around the intersection. Then you need money, without it, you cannot built such complex structures and even more if you need to move hosing or business around to provide more space. And the last one is something not everybody think about: good drivers. Many of the designs on this video have been used in many places and have to be changed ot more complex but "easier" to go around because of drivers not know how to take the correct route, how to yield and how to merge. Best example is down here in Florida where very easy and simple highway to main street intersections had to be replaced with multiple traffic lights eliminating all merging points as people just don't know or WANT to merge correctly. Sad.
