I’ve heard this a lot and just curious. Don’t you have to read the subtitles in English so it’s still being lost in translation?

@@FatherOfPhoebe I've absorbed enough Japanese through learning/previous games so that i can tell when the translation and when the subtitles diverge. Also, I'm too used to the Japanese voice actors to switch to English now, lol.
@FatherOfPhoebe3 ай бұрын
@FumetsuGolf ya that makes more sense then. Can you think of any cool examples where Japanese thought was lost in translation? Not grilling you, again just curious. And realize that by definition it may be hard to put into english 😂
@FumetsuGolf3 ай бұрын
@@FatherOfPhoebe It's been a minute since I've played this one, but I can think of a couple from Infinite Wealth. They're both kind of spoilery, though, so stop reading if you haven't played. In one scene, when they talk about Kiryu's "bucket list", in Japanese they actually say "ending note", which is a different concept where someone facing death leaves notes and instructions for loved ones after they're gone (the game treats it kind of like a checklist of "things Kiryu wants to do", though, but there is more meaning beyond it than just a bucket list). In another scene at the Tojo HQ, Kiryu tells a Captain to vacate the Chairman's seat. One of his subordinates gets angry, but the Captain says "I would expect nothing less from a man of his stature.", but he actually says "I would expect nothing less from the legendary dragon (densetsu no ryu).". These are some minor examples, but it happens pretty consistently through all of the Yakuza games where there is no direct translation for something specific to Japanese culture, or it wouldn't make sense to someone not familiar with it.
@oscarfletcher-nx9ufАй бұрын
The whole of yakuza 5 comes to mind. The worst example is where Baba tries to pick a fight with Kiryu and says "ikemasu" which directly translates to "let's start". But the English subtitles read as "only children believe in dragons". Cool line, but it's on one word the character says so you have half a second to read it. It was super obvious.

@@FatherOfPhoebe thats totally not related to combat sports
@FatherOfPhoebe4 ай бұрын
Size and strength are definitely related to combat. Knowing how to fight is a big deal but if you have more strength behind the same punch it’s more effective. Skill can make up for some size for sure but at the end of the day a 180 lb pro fighter has virtually no chance against a 280 lb pro fighter
@divacroft10344 ай бұрын
@@FatherOfPhoebe Wrong...size doesnt mean anything in a real fight and that was proven many times
@FatherOfPhoebe4 ай бұрын
That is a wildly unfounded statement. Saying wrong or that doesn’t count isn’t an argument. If by real fight you mean guns or weapons or armies then that is a different conversation, but even a fight between two men using the same weapon can be easily decided by reach or power of strikes

Weight classes exist because in a real genuine fight as well as in combat sports the biggest determining factor in victory is Size. It's wild people need to be told this because they watch too much fictional media or have never seen a well trained small guy get absolutely bulldozed by the sheer strength difference some 6'5 300 pound behemoth has over him.
