Wow, that's why a lot of airfoils look like this and not like Clark Y

yep the problem with XFOIL, there is no subroutine implemented to stop if the local Machnumber exceed 1, or if the local pressure coefficient is lower than the critical pressure coefficient.

That's cool! Can you do that starting out with just a cube or something?

Love the video, the music is a great choice. I’ve been flying with a few old timers with these zagi gliders. 4,5 and 6 footer versions. The 6 footers are combat wings. They’re designed to hit each other mid air without sustaining any damage.

This video is great. It just came up on my feed but I was smiling through the whole video. I used this method extensively during my phd :) Anyway I subscribe to your channel.

Great work. Does it matter that the Cm is non-zero? Aircraft would need trimming from control surfaces, and as a result impact the performance shown in the video. Or guess you can always shift the Cg. It is interesting that the converged soln is the elliptical lift dist., I would have though the bell lift dist. might have shown up.

Quite interesting research work, thanks Eytan Adler! Wanted to let you guys know that your efforts to present your work on a public forum are helping undergrad students, like me from India, to appreciate what we are learning in the classroom.

What do you do when the two lines created by the tangent planes are parallel and either always intersect or never intersect?
@MDOLab2 жыл бұрын
Great question Alex! That represents an unsolvable (i.e., singular) linear system. Newton's method would not be able to continue, though you could imagine workarounds where the current states are perturbed slightly with the hope of finding a solvable point nearby. When applying Newton's method to numerical codes in practice, finding a point that is exactly singular is unlikely. However, it can come close in which case Newton's method would return a bad step, but to somewhere that is hopefully better conditioned.

It would be interesting to see this sort of approach applied to other turbine types, such as mid size axial turbines.

Just a wild thought coming through my mouse-room that what if the wing aspect ratio can be changed into its optimum ratio based on the flight path or mission (e.g regional, medium or long-haul) during turnaround. Some kind of a "lego-like" wing 🤣.
