Of the two, Lou was the one that broke new ground, originally breaking, as a new performer, the expected link between tone, melody and emotional power in presentation. A shift in the Zeitgeist; a bit like Andy Warhol did in the fine arts. I love this performance but so regret that Lou felt the need to shift so slightly from the atonal beauty of the original song. Dylanesque perhaps? I wonder how intimidated he felt by Pavarotti - what a challenge that would’ve been. But nothing can take anything away from him.

I'm Italian and I must, with pain, admit it: Pavarotti, a great tenor - don't get me wrong - fits on this Lou Reed song like the sweat of a Texas cow's butt on a plate of pasta.
