I live in the US in a southern state. In college I was training as a geologist. I remember one spring weekend out doing some fieldwork and was hiking a path parallel to a river, through a wooded area. I suddenly spotted an area of bright yellow in the distance. When I got within a few meters I realized it was a patch of yellow Cypripediums. The patch was probably about 3 square meters. This was in northwest Arkansas so it was an area of cold winters with some snowfall most years so it was the type of environment these orchids thrive in. Have always wondered if the patch managed to survive and spread (that area of the state has seen a lot of population growth). That was the only time I've seen orchids in the wild.

I chuckled at your comment about throwing the Cattleya out with the bath water. I think it's important to let them overhear comments like that, in an effort to scare an inflorescence out of them. Hahaha.

I've loved cymbidiums since I discovered them while in high school in the early 1970s. Unfortunately at the time I lived in a warm environment in the US and was not aware of warm-growing cymbidiums. I think they are incredibly beautiful orchids.

Hi Matthew, just to make you even more perfect than you already are 😊 Kulnura is pronounced Kull…new…rugh. You just need to tweak the middle and you have it. Kulnura (and Barrita Orchids) is local to me so finally I know something I can share. 😂

Magnificent collection. Love them. I saw you were talking about supermarket rescue orchids. But I never see Coles or Wollies discount them.

I don't look anymore - but they used to when the flowers died! My favourite nursery always discounts orchids when the flowers die!

Super market Phalaenopsis orchids are forced so there will always be a batch in bloom. Once you get it home it will settle into a yearly cycle though.

A late Merry Christmas to you andyour loved ones sir.Speaking of Miltonias,in your case formerly Miltoniopsis",may I suggest toyou Miltonia phalaenopsis,wich is a dainty pink species with a perfume reminiscent of a rose. Thisoneis acold grower who has the tendency to grow out and up of the pot. Miltonia spectabilis var. Moreliana with its deep purple large flowers .Sadly it is a creeping species and it will grow any wich way on a mount and lastly Miltonia Celle "Wasserfall" AM/AOS with gorgeous redflowers with a patternof a waterfall of course.Maybe you will have to get in ontact with people who have "old times" orchid collections.

I hope you had a Merry Christmas and thanks for sharing this video. First, I have a white Phal that grew two large spikes last winter. They were so thick that I cut them back to about a foot long and used them as a plant support in its terra cotta cone pot. Now in addition to the two new spikes, the older ones have each grown two smaller spikes. I’m curious to see how this plays out. Secondly, I have a Paph that has grown tall and lanky and does not have leaves on the stem that is now about 3”. Do you have any suggestions on how to get this to grow new leaves from the medium?
@helloplantlovers5 күн бұрын
Good luck with the Phalaenopsis! As to the Paphiopedilum, could a) possibly need a re-pot if the plant just isn't looking great, and b) it could also be not getting enough light if it's leggy. Try and find somewhere a little brighter and if you're in the southern hemisphere then a re-pot and a good feed might also be the ticket! Good luck!

You may think you’re an amateur but I beg to differ. In a mere few videos I have seen of yours, I have learned so much. Thank you for filling in so many of the blanks as to the various orchids and their natural growing conditions. It certainly helps in placement of them as well as creating a suitable medium for them. Might I add, I love your whimsy which makes it extra fun watching your most informative videos.

Matthew! I truly enjoy your videos and with Stephen Ryan. I just inherited 12 of these and I have reported some of them in rinsed red lava rock and a few wood 🪵 Chips. (What kind do you suggest?) There were some dead roots which I cut off with scissors and alcohol. 🌱🌲 So I was wondering if they have a better chance of survival without being too wet? I got a new fertilizer that is magnesium calcium. Have you done any of this kind of changeover and if so, are you going to repot in a future video? Thank you so much and appreciate your work. Robert-Atlanta 🇺🇸 USA
@helloplantlovers5 күн бұрын
Thank you for watching both channels! Not sure which orchid type you're referring to? If it's Phalaenopsis then yes, don't keep them wet. I let mine dry a bit between watering but never completely dry. And as to changing the media they're are in, go for it. It's just a re-pot basically and people have many ways of potting them, depends on your conditions really. But medium sized bark with a little sphagnum is good, or all sphagnum as well, or any other type of media really! Good luck with them all!

Mathew, which flowers do you find last longest, or should it be longer, masdevallia or sarcochilus ? It should be longer.

I've learned so much from this video alone. Thank you. I too am a terracotta pot person, up in Queensland (and been scolded for the terracotta). I've quite recently started using an Orchid specific liquid fertiliser I ordered online, branded 'Growth Technology'. It's quite early days, but I've already seen quite a marked improvement, particularly with my Bunnings and deflasked babies.
