Another great and informative video. Particularly helpful to hear your comparison of Skies vs Storm. Really seems like no reason to own both. And if choosing between one, then Skies maybe the better choice… Does seem perhaps a bit puzzling as to why Storm was designed and released even though by all accounts a great standalone game by a well-regarded designer… Thanks for the video. Hello! Just wandering how you now feel about the game? Do you play regularly, do you still play it at all? Always interested in hindsight views? I have the ‘all-in’ on the second printing coming any day now and can’t decide whether to keep this or sell on? It looks like a real ‘love letter’ to old school D&D but does it still hold up against more modern games… or will it end up on my pile of shame…

Hello. I very much appreciate your comment on my review. I’ll take a look at v1.4, but I very much hope for an expanded (extended example of play) and sanitized v2.0 with your next game in the series. The guys at Hexasim took 3 game releases to get their “Eagles” system stable, so if you can do it in two that would be great! A most excellent first release and some thought-provoking ideas. - Paul

@@theoakenknight1748 Hello Paul, you are totally right. I think the effort we make and having already version 1.4 (which will soon be released officially and will be the final verion) shows how seriously we take the demand for some clarifications and also, many gamers asked for more detail (like the supporting offensive role of Horse Artillery). We will also include an extended example of play. It should NOT take us 2 or 3 games to have a waterproof system. My goal is to have that done with 1.4 of Eylau.

I agree the game heavily favours the axis in the 41' scenario. However, the Soviets are much stronger in 42 (more tanks, a fighter and a bomber). With that airpower the Soviets can attack exposed tanks without having to risk their own tanks and artillery, effectively delaying the Germans. The Chineese are also much stronger in 42 compared to 41, having double the amount of infantry if I recall correctly. Overall the 42 scenario is fairly balanced, perhaps the allies could use a small bid (one inf in Egypt and India, for example).
@theoakenknight1748
@theoakenknight1748 Ай бұрын
For fun, I’m thinking of trying: 1) Allow the US and UK to transfer up to 10% of their production to the Soviets as lend-lease. 2) Japan and USSR do not begin the game at war. a) Japan may not declare war until China is defeated. b) USSR may not declare war until after Germany is defeated. What do you think? - Paul
@georgem589
@georgem589 Ай бұрын
@@theoakenknight1748 Assuming you mean the 41 scenario, I dont think it will be enough to balance the game. Especially point 2 b would help Japan, as it can go all in on China/India and not worry about an exposed Manchuria. I think giving Britain 1 inf in Egypt (to prevent Egypt falling turn 1), 1 inf or artillery in India (to contest the Japanese) and 1 Chineese inf in Wuhan could be enough. Perhaps even add 1 Soviet unit in Moscow (artillery or tank), to give Russia something to fight back with on turn 1.

This game looks like a Confederate steam roller. Confederate combat weight, limited to zero moral issues (game mechanics) reforming a panicked unit that falls back and in a 1 hour turn reforms-marches further forward than before-shoots-melee? No penalties? 100% BS! I have a feeling the terrain effects on Pikes should stay. I think it actually benefits the Confederate forces more! They see the Union troops coming from everywhere there is no fog of war. Unless the Union rolls 9s and 10s and the Confederates 2-3s in combat it is game over! I question the artillery ratings. And Davis's Brigade is not Green rated? Leader incompetence should have some calculation! I did love the video! Great job my issue is the game mechanics.

Gosh John…, don’t hold back…, say what you really mean! 🤬🤢🤮. The game is fairly low in complexity, so you do give up some detail along the way. It traces its lineage all way back to circa 1975 with its great grand daddy “Terrible Swift Sword”, an all-time fave of mine. Dad was “High Tide of the Confederacy”, another good one. The pike rule is just flat wrong, as Union units cannot get to where they did historically. Even the designer is talking about changing it now. Like most G’burg games, the ANV must win by noonish July 2nd or they lose. Without command control constraints, the Confederates best play is to charge Cemetery Hill at dawn July 2nd. But that’s how most Gettysburg games work. Thanks for your comment; most excellent read. - Paul. PS, You are right about Davis; a little nepotism goes a long way.

Hey Mr 6664! When I set up for a video I evaluate how I can get the best overall shooting angle. In ToW, I wanted the primary axis of the Soviet attack to be nearest the table edge, so I could get my best shooting angle in that region. Given that in fact-to-face play at the table, most games have one player or another looking at the map sideways or upside down, that’s just part of the deal of being a hex-and-counter wargamer.
