Hello, complete beginner here, for making wooden pens, how would you make a glass like CA finish? I know it's sand the wood to some preferred grit (I've heard a range of opinions on what people prefer) and apply the CA, but what do you do next? Do you use only kustom grit, or sand/micromesh then kustom grit? And does using custom grit mean a buffing wheel isn't needed anymore, is the custom grit actually a finer grit than the buffing compound? Or if using a buffing wheel would be good, how would that fit into the equation?
@JNDCreations
@JNDCreations 2 ай бұрын
@@chelsea78344 hey Chelsea. So you can get away with not sanding too high with a CA finish I believe. You could certainly buff it with Kustom grit afterwards though. Most micro mesh packs top out at 12,000 grit. Kustom Grit goes to 100,000 grit. It’s just a different process really. Personally I’d use one or the other. There’s no reason you can’t do both, but personally I’d tend to go with only one. Kustom Creations actually sell a buffing wheel compound now that is the Kustom Grit equivalent for buffing wheels. I think it’s called Buffing Compound from memory. For a pen Id sand up to 8000 (for a gloss finish, stop around 400 for more of a matte finish) apply your ca finish. Then apply Kustom grit or the buffing compound. In affect they are the same thing really, just in a different form to allow you to apply it differently. With pens, there’s no reason you couldn’t stop after the CA step though. Depends on how much gloss you want i suppose
@chelsea78344
@chelsea78344 2 ай бұрын
@@JNDCreations Ahhhh, I see! Thank you! I'll experiment with sanding to different grits once applying the CA (and sanding the wood before applying CA of course), then using Kustom Grit and see how shiny I can get it. And I did find the buffing compound, it's strangely not on the Kustom Grit website but it is on SE Queensland woodworking supplies. Right, so just clarifying, if I use the normal Kustom Grit 1&2, I would apply it using a paper towel (?) with my pen spinning on the lathe, but if I were to use the Buffing compound, I'd put it on a buffing wheel, and then have the buffing wheel spinning on the lathe and polish the pen that way?
@JNDCreations
@JNDCreations 2 ай бұрын
@@chelsea78344 that is a little odd. Also, feel free to reach out to Scott. He’s the founder of Kustom Creations and invented all the products there himself. He’s a lovely dude and has a wealth of knowledge on all the products and what they are best at. You can connect with him on Instagram! I would stop the lathe and use a rag to apply the KG, then buff it for a few mins under 600rpm on the lathe. Once it’s worked in and warmed up you can increase the speed. Just be sure to remove any excess before moving onto step 2, or the grits will contaminate each other. Bang on with the buffing compound 👍

Good one, Mate. A few thoughts, not advice. I weld on my pine top work bench which has a sacrificial masonite overlay. For welding I put on a 4.5mm sheet of fibro. There's thicker stuff if you think it's needed. I still have to watch the heat build up when there's a lot of red glowing metal but it takes a fair bit before the wood underneath starts smoking and I've done a lot of work on it. Pieces of fibro stood on edge also make good spark stoppers. You're going to get lectured on welding the zinc coating (that was the big grey cloud you made). I strip the zinc off in hydrochloric acid. Gas masks are recommended and do it outdoors. Best to dilute it 50% or more, watch it, move it around especially with chain, hook it out and rinse it well. The remaining steel will blacken in places and you'll get flash rust but it's all good if you're going to paint it. To get straight chain I lay it between two pieces of angle iron placed back to back using the angle iron to hold one of the umm...four sides? Lots of clamps and pull it tight. I started with flux core and you'll get far with yours.
