Towner is one of three people who can turn the 12 string into something more than a gimmick, the others being Egberto and Leo Kottke.

This is an album that never grows old in my collection , it should be mandatory for any aspiring jazz drummer as Christensen has a beautiful flow that just seems to follow and enhance all the soloists while still drives the the ride cymbal relentlessly, back in the day -20 -30 years ago the review i read described his ride cymbal was like a Mack truck breathing down your neck .

Christiansen is just perfection on this track and so many others. He embodies quiet intensity like no other drummer. It's like he drives the band from underneath, below the radar. What a touch he has. What a tasteful drummer.

One of my favorite songs. Saw Towner with Oregon in early 70s at Memphis State. Master monster musician!

Hard to believe, I first heard this almost 50 years ago. It still is one of those songs that takes you on a ride. The group is so unified and intense under Jan's solo. Magical. A true classic. One of the great ECM recordings. My favorite recordings of this was this version and another that was an extended Ralph Towner solo 12-string guitar version that really showcased his genius. I remember playing it for my father and he refused to believe it was one guitar player. (The same reaction he had when I played him some Cecil Taylor - refusing to believe it was one pianist improvising.)

Great collective of musicians that were clearly on the same vibe!...Towner put together a great stucture of the song for that epic session!....and Garbarek took it to the next level!...

Eberhard Weber's bass is like some majestic nexus joining all parts of this masterpiece. Extraordinary music from the early and wonderful days of ECM.

Nice, Eberhard. At least he was able to get down on tape as much as he did before his attack…. So sad. Such a genuinely nice, honest person too. Why couldn’t’ve that happened to Henry Kissinger or George HW Bush or some bastard like that?
