As an exchange student in Belgium who is leaving the country in just 12 days, this speaks to me so much. I really hope the return will go smoothly for me, but I can´t even imagine leaving this country...

Welcome to the real world, and please, please don't be sad: all of you will enjoy more. You just compared 2 different cultures from a multitude of it of the Earth. You are just beginning to enjoy your discoveries. You are now citizens of the world and you know that there is bad and good humans anywhere just with differents rules. I wish all of you the broadest outlook and consciousness.

The exchange student that came to my school (we hadn't had an exchange student come to our school before her which is why i say The rather than one of the) inspired me to try to become an exchange student. After doing a lot of research I chose Rotary Youth Exchange and the country Japan. That same exchange student who inspired me shared this video and I thought it was just perfect because of it being a Rotarian's video. I'm going on a short term exchange next summer and a long term exchange my jr. or sr. year.

I returned from my exchange 9 months ago and omg I do miss being an exchange student. My last week was so hard, overall my exchange year, but I would not change anything. Being an exchange student changed me forever and I`m so glad to have been an exchange student. I miss my host country, host family and friends every single day.It is so weird to don`t feel a foreigner in a place anymore...so weird to don`t speak a different language and learn a new word everyday. To all the exchange students my advice is enjoy it the most you can,not matter how hard it is...you will only remember the good parts of it. ENJOY!!!

Bravo Kate!! Thank you for such an amazing representation of what we all feel about our exchange. Thank you for taking me through my own journey of preparing to return home from my own exchange. I'm forever grateful to Rotary for changing my life, and fortunate to have been living in my host country, after returning 21 years later. Well done! Josh Fields Japan 1983-84 from D 5100 USA

Hello Kate, I found this video when a great friend of mine (who I met in host country which was an exchange student as I am/was/used to be) showed it to me and I remeber how I felt when I listen tl it for the forst time which made me realized the real meaning of being an exchange student. The feeling of being somewhere but not knowing where you belong to. I've heard this amazingly truthful video hundreds of times and I still cry everytime I start looking back in time. And as memories bring tears to my eyes I reckon how deep this message takes place in my heart. I must tell you thank you for puting into words what not many can even explain. Thank you for letting me find a way of finally being able to explain how I feel... "Even though it's been a year." I still have yet to find my place somewhere in between this to worlds but it's always easier when you know you're not alone. Thank you Kate, thank you for making us believe in true love. Love, Ana.

Wowwww that looks so exciting! I was a RYE same year as you. Sorry for the imperfect English but this makes me cry like a baby because I miss my exchange year so much. Some people said I should stop thinking about everything in Texas, btw I'm Thai went to Texas. Like.... I'm so sad cause no one understand what I'm thinking and miss. If you have a good exchange year (or the year of your life) you will understand me!! I miss everything, I know you know how it feels to leave the place that once you called it your home. And I don't have that much money to fly across the world to visit host families many times. I wish I can safe money to fly back there soon. :D

I left for mine in august of 2012 and came back July of 2013. For the most part exchanges start in july or august, except for students in the southern hemisphere that start their exchanges when their summer vacation is, in January since their seasons are opposite.

Hi. I'm 17, I'm mexican, and I'm a exchange student. I arrived France 3 months ago. Now I understand what people meant with the first months being the hardest. I had problems with my limited knowledge of the language, which, I know is slowly improving. But I wonder, if the homesickness will ever stop. If I will be able to fully enjoy these before it ends. This is beacoming also into my world. It is and will be part of me forever, and it will be hard to leave it.

But everything just gone, one year past and it's gone forever. I wish I could replay the exchange year again and again. There were tears, smiles and eveything. RYE 2012-2013

He became one of my best friends, I had told him everything that was going on in my life and he would help me get though it. It was like he had been my friend all a long. I miss my mate.. xx
