The Scouts are both 9.6 Inches wider than the Rivains. That is a lot. Positive is more likely more shoulder room in the Scouts, Downside is those ever smaller parking stalls will be a lot harder to navigate and susceptible to door dings and sometimes inability to get into your vehicle if the cars next to you are too close.

I’d prefer Rivian’s size for parking for sure. Scouts are too wide, but makes for a roomy bench seat

The "need" for physical knobs and buttons reminds me of the transition from the days of blackberries and non-smart phones to iphone/android around 2008-2012. People SWORE up and down that they would never buy a phone without a physical numberpad or keyboard. And so many android phone manufacturers provided these physical keyboards for a bit. But now look where we are - no one cares about this and everyone is fine with their iphones. The reality is that new users (young people buying their first ever car) don't care or even prefer the touch screen, and there are many benefits to a pure software approach. Only a small number of people would purposely buy an inferior product just because it has some niche physical control they deemed as a dealbreaker.

I remember the first time I drove my Tesla and everything was set up. I got into the car. It already had my route planned for work. The temp was adjusted and fans were set. I just got into, put it in drive and went. And when my wife drives it adjusts to her settings. There’s something magical about it.

This thing looks awesome! I have an R1t. The Scout will probably be more capable off road and hopefully easier and cheaper service. The Harvester is a great idea to bring in people that would struggle with the thought of fully electric vehicles.

Competition is good for the market! The Hummer EV is kind of a competitor to Rivian, but only in that they are both off road capable. Scout is looking like it's more in line with the same base. I put my $100 down as our EV9 lease will be up in '27. While I like the idea of being all electric the Harvester option is too good for the times when I want to tow to a destination. That is where EVs fall short. I also love my Lightning and tow with it daily, but it's a work truck that I charge nightly. If I had to tow more than 150 miles it would be a non starter. For those who do serious off roading the buttons are a plus as touch screens don't have a place to hold the hand. The only plus to them is they don't break unless you hit them so hard you actually destroy the screen. If that happens props, because you're really getting after it! LOL

@@MikeKantorskiTech That is the only real reason other than real back woods/ deep wilderness journeys that a person would have a valid need for the range extender. Rivian is burning thru cash. Their corrections according to projections won’t turn the tide. The software issue could workout for scout by VW just buying out that piece of Rivian when it collapses. No rudeness intended but your views of Rivian vs Scout clearly shows the generation gap and how these things are viewed. As a Scout owner I can attest that the Rivian is not the type of vehicle most Scout owners would see as a positive. So the things you prefer (unibody, all touch screen, a 1 second difference in 0-60 and 100% electric) are not things most off roaders and true scout enthusiasts would prefer. Keep in mind these vehicles had a LOT of input from the large IH/Scout community for what they wanted to see in a revived vehicle and and NOT what a Rivian has to offer vs the Scout.
@MikeKantorskiTech

100% agree with you! One of the reasons I’m so interested in both Rivian and even Tesla is due to the innovation in technology. I can appreciate the old school style scout is bringing back, and I know people like yourself will love this thing. I hope I get to check it out when it does hit the market. Maybe it will make me rethink what I like in my Rivian. My bias definitely shows in this one lol thank you for watching though

I own a Rivian R1S and couldn’t agree more with you. When the scout was announced, I was thinking how cool would it be if they made it with no screens what so ever. But then realized how unrealistic that would be. It would be difficult to give the user all the functionality with just old school mechanical gauges (charging status, drive modes, Level 2 driving features, etc). I think Scout nailed the design and the gas hybrids will bring a wave of users to EV that would never buy one otherwise. It will give them a chance to see how little they actually need gas after purchase. I’m all for this. (Your comment was supper polite BTW 🤙)

I can attest that many IH/Scout owners despise this new venture but I've never been your traditional scout owner. I did opt for the Harvester gas+electric option since this would be my first EV.. Do I really need 500+ range? Realistically no but when I do travel I'd prefer to not have range anxiety. Rumor has it that it'll be allowed on the supercharger network so that's nice to have as an option. I do love the physical buttons and body on frame then again I'm a sucker for that type of cockpit and vehicle in general.

Scout all day due to the range extender. What's the point of having an offroad vehicle if you can't take it on a multiday adventure deep into the backcountry? Also, the bigger the battery size, the worse your vehicle will preform in deep sand. Rivians are way too heavy.

Thanks for this video. I want a Rivian and root for them. But I'm just going to say it. To me, the front design of the scout is superior. Aside from the vertical lights design, Rivian's other weakness is the overly complicated screen interface. Scout has the first one beat.

No, Rivian should not be worried. VW is engineering this nostalgia trip, that company busted for diesel engine emissions fraud. Yeah. An EV with an old school bench seat and bolted on buttons and knobs on a dash with EV screens looks stupid. And a weird hybrid version with a lawnmower engine to charge the main battery? Complexity and fire hazard. Folks should test drive a Rivian. They will see that Scout is no threat.

Thanks for video Mike. Watching Rivian and Scout (both now connected via Volkswagen) dual and simultaneously collaborate over the next 2-3 years will certainly be interesting to watch. Rivian loses almost $1.5 bill/qtr or over $100k per vehicle sold. As proof, in 2Q24, Rivian lost $1.5 bill. Delivered 13,790 vehicles. $1.5 bill divided by 13,790 is loss of $108,800 per vehicle

Just to lock and unlock the car and to see the battery in 1 percent increments (can’t do that in the car [chevy bolt]) in their mobile app, GM wants $15/month. I tried it for a couple of months then decided it wasn’t worth and dropped it. Of course, I couldn’t just go to their web page and cancel.
