If you all wondering what happened to Climax No. 3. It’s now at the Roaring Camp & Big Trees Narrow Gauge Railroad in Felton, California (Along with the Santa Cruz Big Trees & Pacific Railroad). The locomotive is currently awaiting restoration back to operation again as their Roaring Camp Climax No. 5 “Bloomsburg” and by being rebuilt to run on the Railroad’s 3 Foot (914 mm) gauge tracks.

I have deep appreciation for the fact that 14 is made out of an 0-8-0 not only because that's what the real one was made of but I also have made a couple Lionel 0-8-0's into Southern 2-8-0's and I just love the general look of number 14

The #14 has a unique look for a Consolidation because of her very small (switcher) drivers and a large diameter boiler.

I'm glad you enjoyed your trip to Dundon! I'm thoroughly enjoying my representation of the BC&G in the mid-1960s. You don't have to have a big layout to have a great looking railroad that's fun to operate! Brooks

What whistle was that at the beginning of the video?
@BCGsummer1964
@BCGsummer1964 Жыл бұрын
The prototype whistles used on all my videos are recording of actual BC&G and ERC&L engines taken from two 33 1/3 RPM LPS produced back in the 1960s. You can find information about those records on my website: www.buffalocreekandgauley.com and going to the REFERENCES pages. I'm not sure exactly which locomotive recording is on this particular video. I hope you enjoyed the video and thanks for writing!

Dave, Thanks for your note. Exactly right! It can't be overstated how important it is to pick a prototype, an era and a location when planning a model railroad. I passed up lots of neat S scale items over the years because they did NOT fit my prototype and/or era. If a locomotive or car type would not have been on the BC&G in the era I model, I can admire a model of that car but I do not buy it. Every piece of rolling stock I own is correct for the era and is used during operations or rotated in to keep the cars on the layout 'fresh'. Brooks Stover

Besides being one of your readers, I'm a hard-core fantasist freelancer, back in after 40 years out. But, the only thing I collected while out was one or two coffee mugs per year while bitterly paying the storage fees on what I had already, which WILL run again! Soon! Discipline is a good thing, and you've done a fine job, set a great example.

such a long tunnel with no access?
@BCGsummer1964
@BCGsummer1964 Жыл бұрын
Leonard, That's a great question! Actually, the entire length of the hidden track below Swandale...and all the staging tracks...are 100% accessible from under the layout. But more importantly, because of the great reliability and stability of S scale equipment, in the nearly 6 years the layout has been operational I've not one time had a derailment that necessitated accessing any of the hidden track. Note that there are NO hidden turnouts Also, with S I never have to clean the track...I just make sure a run trains regularly! Brooks Stover

Ross, Building a realistic appearing layout and then running the trains in an unrealistic manner would miss the point. S scale trains (1/64) run great at low speeds and with the sound from the Soundtraxx decoders it's really like being there! Brooks Stover

You have a nice layout, but me, I'm truly fascinated by mega layouts. What I do get from smaller layouts are ideas. I want to build over the next 10/15 years a 40 ft long x 30/35 ft wide super mega totally realistic layout, using 85% off my space.
@BCGsummer1964

My prior layout was 45' x 25' and I enjoy this one just as much! A large layout can completely overwhelm the builder with maintenance and almost certainly cannot be done with a crew of helpers. I'd suggest you build a small layout to find out what parts you like and which not...and then design your dream layout. It might not be as big as you think!

Awesome layout! How do you handle the uncoupling of cars on your layout? Do you use magnetic uncouplers, or something like a skewer to uncouple them?
@BCGsummer1964
@BCGsummer1964 Жыл бұрын
Joseph, I use a 'pick' or 'skewer' for uncoupling. I also use manual ground throws, not electrically controlled turnouts. I carefully designed the layout so all the ground throws and all the places where cars will be uncoupled are within easy reach. Both the manual uncoupling and manual ground throws greatly simplify wiring/construction and there's zero chance for electrical failures. It's also much easier for visiting operators to reach out to the manual ground throws than to try to find the right remote button on a control panel or fascia. Brooks Stover
