This is a great find. I found your Facebook page, and I’m following there too. I’m also a watercolor artist!! I’ve been painting with acrylics for years, and have done a couple of horses (one is of mine). A couple of years ago I decided to try watercolor, and I’ve mostly followed tutorials, but starting to do some things on my own. I don’t feel competent enough to do animals yet, but seeing the ones your friend did of your donkeys makes me want to try. Fun learning about donkeys. Our horses will be 22 and 24 in the spring, and at some point we’re going to probably end up with only one. I’ve worried so many times about one horse being alone, and lonely. A donkey might be worth considering, especially since I need to keep my horse on a dry lot now. I would never just jump into it without a good plan and really understanding what’s involved, but fun seeing yours, and happy to be following. We also have a dog, and just the three animals really tie us down. But, it’s a choice we’ve made, and there’s nothing quite like living in the country, looking out the window, and seeing the horses (or wildlife). We’re both retired, and the one thing I worry about is eventually having to move into town. I like people, but I really cherish having all this space (my husband feels the same way). And one last thing: Russian history is fascinating.
@annewatman677Күн бұрын
I’m not sure what kind of sand is in our dry lot area, but it’s very dusty. And, unfortunately, part of the dry lot is on an incline. We have a lot of clay, but not the way you do. We have to keep one horse on a dry lot because of laminitis, and because it was so dry this summer, we were constantly dealing with dust, and his hooves ended up chipping and cracking. This is the first year dealing with all of this, and it has not been fun! Love your donkeys, and so glad they’ve found such a wonderful, caring home. Also, we (mostly my husband) clean up twice a day. I love the covered wooden step that goes into the barn! One thing we have trouble with is how quickly the sand wears down at the doorway where the horses come into the barn to get to their stalls. Our area might be too steep, but I’m sharing this with my husband for all your great ideas!
@ClearCreekCabinMiniFarmКүн бұрын
@@annewatman677 Thank you - We use “manufactured sand” which is man made from crushing granite rocks. It can be very dusty. During really dry times I’ll dump the water buckets under their hangers when refilling, so they stand in wet sand whenever drinking. This puts a little moisture in their hooves. I also wash their hooves with Water & Apple Cider Vinegar when picking them which also helps with the over drying of their feet while killing any Thrush Bacteria 👍
@annewatman677Күн бұрын
@ Thank you for the quick response! I’ve never heard of using Apple Cider vinegar, but certainly worth a try. And, I’m not at all familiar with Trish bacteria. We’re in southern Wisconsin, so maybe that’s why? We’ve had such a hard time finding someone to help us (we’re older than you!). When we initially built the barn, and put in the “sand,” I’m guessing manufactured was what was used. You’ve definitely given us some good ideas. Thank you.

I started cutting steel siding in 1980 with a backwards blade in a skill saw. It always left burrs. If the blade heated up ypou could not cut a straight line. It won't cut wood if you turn it around. It will burn wood. Buy a steel cutting saw from Dewalt with a 50 tooth ferrous metal blade. Also wear hearing protection and a Face shield. Hot metal coming off these saws can burn into your skin and stick to it.

I appreciate the time you have taken to provide this resource; it's not easy finding reliable, first-hand knowledge on this matter. We purchased our first home here in Vero Beach, Florida, in June of '23. The house is a 1933 block structure, with a crawlspace beneath joists that support a diagonally oriented t&g subfloor beneath oak t&g flooring. My theory regarding the potential for long-term troubles is that, with the advent of central air, the equilibrium of moisture content of wood above vs below the air-conditioned living quarters is disrupted. The occasional crowning of the t&g flooring in isolated spots wouldn't bother me if not for the potential for unseen consequences. The idea of sprayed foam being applied to the underside of my flooring system sends shivers down my spine.......what if it's applied with just a few breaches? I mention that because there are a lot of companies that promote it as part of a full encapsulation. If I'm understanding correctly, you're suggesting integration of the crawlspaces air into the home cooling system. Am I at least thinking in the right direction? Thanks again! Nick
@ClearCreekCabinMiniFarmАй бұрын
@@mechantics I am not an Engineer and can only share my experiences. It’s obvious that moisture is the problem in your crawl space causing the wood floors to swell. I would seal the foundation wall blocks with a specialized concrete paint/sealer and + a ballasted vapor barrier on the dirt floor (6 mil polyethylene held down at overlapped seams with crushed stone & affixed vertically to the block walls) Instead of introducing conditioned air I would install a dehumidifier & a small fan to circulate the air to the dehumidifier & close any out side vents. I introduced a/c air primarily for heat in the crawl space for winter + my space has a poured concrete floor with poly underneath (much more forgiving) Good Luck - reach out to our email if you would like to discuss more - email address is in the “about” section here on YT

Do not cut your metal roof or siding material with a skill saw unless you plan on painting the cut edge or it will rust. Even if it's galvanized under the paint it will still cut through the zinc coating and rust. So rent a nibbler or buy one and then sell it when you're done with a job, but keep the die cutters lubricated or it will get dull sooner than you want. You can use a spray lubricant in between cuts.
@ClearCreekCabinMiniFarmАй бұрын
@@bobmiller8485 Better yet order your roofing material cut to length at the roofing supplier. That’s what I do for bigger projects. I only cut roofing metal with a saw for things like chicken coops & animal runs (& put the cut end in the ridge end cap)
@bobmiller8485Ай бұрын
@@ClearCreekCabinMiniFarm yes that's true I was going to mention that. But a lot of people buy off the rack and don't order their material to size either because they're afraid of their math skills or they don't draw up a plan. Also you still got to cut around doors and windows and etc. also if they use a nibbler make sure you take your shoes off before you go into your house or you're going to scratch the floor from all the shaving stuck to it.
