i just decided to start my NBCT.... What will be the best order do do take the content?? Which one i should do first?
@senormississippi
@senormississippi Жыл бұрын
In hindsight, I would probably do them in the following order: C3, C2, C4, C1 (test). I think doing the video component (C3) is an easier way to learn how to write for NBCT and will help with C4 which I think is the hardest, or at least most confusing/difficult to prepare for. Good luck!

For each of the components, are they strictly written in the target language?
@senormississippi

All writing components are submitted in English. The only target language material is from the selected response section of C1. Hope this helps!

Hello, I am a non US citizen and I now reside in Saudi Arabia. I hold a bachelor degree in management from a US regionally accredited university. I am willing to teach French and Spanish as a second language in a private American elementary and middle school. I am fluent in both languages but I need some kind of US certification. (When I was in the US I took CLEP test in both French 1&2 and Spanish 1&2 and scored 80/80 and 78/80 respectively) What could be the fastest way to get certified online? If I get the job I will only teach Spanish and/or French as a second language. Thank you in advance

Hm, I am not 100% how to answer your question. I don't know much about certification for elementary level schools. However, if the school is private, there technically should not be any requirements from a department of education level since it is a private school. I hope this helps!

This was super helpful!!! I am currently working on C3 and I do feel as though I will need it to carry me as well. I did a story asking activity and filmed it, it had the cultural component definitely tied in (it was a story about a girls perfect quinceanera and her getting ready using reflexive verbs-the focus of this mini unit was quinceanera and quinceanera traditions). Just concerned about students having minimal output in the TL, it’s mostly me speaking and my students answering my questions… what did you say in your commentary to cite your videos about how you knew they were learning? If I say that through their affirmations of Sí/No or other circling techniques that they were following me/engaged? Would that be valid? I did another video lesson of running dictation where they had to work in groups on the story we did, one person being the runner, another a writer, another an illustrator, and another a sequencer… they were demonstrating comprehension through their drawings, I felt like they were engaged in the videos and using Spanish, but not 100% of the time… I just wanted to ask you because you also employ CI technique but in each video I do not feel confident about their output in TL. Thoughts? Also, How often did you cite evidence from your videos in your commentary? I’m kinda attempting this process solo with no mentor, so anything I feel like would be super helpful!!! Your video was awesome!
@senormississippi
@senormississippi 2 жыл бұрын
Marlaina, thanks for the comment and compliment! My first question would be what level you are working with? If it is level 1, it could be completely normal to expect minimal output from your students during your video. I think your si/no affirmations and circling techniques idea would be fine! I don't think the readers/evaluators are looking for 100% target language output from the students, but citing evidence of student learning at specific parts of the video is important in my opinion. If you email me ([email protected]), I can respond back to you with more details! Look forward to hearing from you.

Hi! I just recorded a lesson today with my students doing stations. What were you doing in your videos that you recorded? I felt like I was mostly just walking around checking in on what they were doing because they didn’t have many questions.
@senormississippi
@senormississippi 2 жыл бұрын
So in my stations video, one of the stations was with me in a small group setting (4-5 students plus me) discussing school spirit and having a back and forth conversation/review about the unit's content/core vocab. The other stations were completely independent. Ideally you want to have someone else record your lesson and prep them a bit on the moments you are hoping for them to capture.

How do you choose what lesson to do? Does it matter? I am a CI teacher too but I use Señor Wooly and SOMOS as curriculums trying to align with other textbook teachers in my department
@senormississippi
@senormississippi 2 жыл бұрын
When you think about choosing a lesson, I would strongly encourage you to make sure that lesson has some sort of cultural aspect. I'd also say that different lessons/units are more beneficial to which component you are tackling. I used Senor Wooly for my C2 (differentiated instruction), assessing two different learners' summative and formative writing assessments. There are TONS of wooly activities that cater to different learning styles and I implemented many of them. The Wooly facebook page is a great place to find these. Some of the top of my head include: bunch of hunches, circle the wagons, parallel universe and nuggets.

Thank you so much for your tips. On my third try taking the OPI, I obtained an Advanced-Mid and went up two full levels from Intermediate-High. Your tips helped me gear my studying, although I personally felt better with the OPI and not OPIC. I even decided to do my own video with my experience on the OPI and OPIC.

Thanks for your feedback! Yes, I feel like I could have potentially scored higher through the OPI but opted for the OPIc for the sake of cheaper cost. One of my former university professors is a licensed OPI interviewer and helped me practice/study. He felt completely confident that I could reach that Adv Low-Adv Mid range. It's helpful to confidence to hear those things! Best of luck and I will be on the look out for your video!

Make sure you hit up the Facebook group. It was very helpful with all my components with bouncing ideas off other teachers. For C2, the main thing is to select two different types of learners and SHOW EVIDENCE of the measures you took to reach both of them. These students should ideally show growth between their summative and formative assessment but not necessarily HAVE to. Be sure your assessments can show hard data/evidence of growth. Best of luck!

You're amazing! I've watched this video many times this yea!. Question - I am studying for component 1 and was wondering if you had templates or resources for the culture writing (E2). Do you have a suggestion on how to approach the 3 Ps AND historical, political, economic, intellectual, artistic, etc... about their provided topic in 30 minutes? The scoring says to write ONE way the topic impacts the culture seeming to contradict the instructions mentioning the whole list of things to discuss! Do you know if every sub-topic has to be mentioned to get a passing score or if you don't talk about say the artistic aspects of a geographical feature could you still pass?
@senormississippi
@senormississippi 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the positive comment! I'm glad this video has been helpful. For constructed response 2 (CR2), I recommend picking a specific country that you have experienced personally via study abroad, etc. or are passionate about. Do a deep dive on some of the big "influencers" of that country, ie, geographical features (from the example given in the instructions), political/social movements, historical figures...things/people that shaped that country's culture. You want to study with a broad approach, being able to touch on as many of those facets (historical, political, etc.) but don't beat yourself up if you can't cover ALL of them. I'd guess 5-6 of them? I forget how many there are. I made a 3.25 on CR2 and remember writing a ton about it, but maybe got docked those points because I missed one or two facets. And again, like I said in the video (I think??), PRACTICE doing a timed writing on your own. It might seem hard to make up a prompt, but just practicing typing up everything you've studied and reviewed will help! Good luck!

Hola, so I use Chili peppers as papers that go in but the same system basically. I think just the idea of getting a chili really motivates them even if they don't win. It the fact that they got a Chile! I do drawings every 1 to 2 months and if I am latethey will ask anout it. I try not to reward food but rather they get to pick prizes from prize box which has random stuff like from dollar tree or even old vas! Lol. They get to pick from a list so I have a google doc they can pick to be canta ninja, xtra credit ticket, free lunch, teacher dress up as so.ething, choice seating etc.....I can pm you the doc. Last month i felt very nice and i cluded whole class prizes like donut for class.

Hola hombre, gracias por el video y todos los detalles, ayuda mucho. Anyway, I'm an Arab native and I'm willing to take OPI or OPIc for Arabic (fusha, universal Arabic not dialects), what do you think could be best for me OPI or OPIc? I'm pretty much comfortable with Arabic fusha, eventhough I didn't practice it since school, but I do read Arabic books everyday and listen to TV, so it's very familiar. I want to take the test because I want to teach Arabic as a 2nd language for non native speakers. Gracias por tu ayuda, y mucha suerte.
