I think this reaction gets it right! I've been listening to this song for decades and I've always felt that this song is unversal! I get the message from this song that at birth, we are ALL visited by an angel, or however you choose to call it, but we are all given that "divine blessing" that bestows us our purpose and puts us on a life path that is uniquely ours. And what we all have in common is that we all must live our life, and follow our purpose with Love, with Patience, and with Faith. No limits!

I appreciated your comments, but you might consider waiting until a song is finished before pontificating about it at such great length. I first heard this song a week after (together with my sister) clearing out our mum's apartment after her death in 2009. My sister had already left to drive back to New Jersey (we were in Montreal) and the only things left in the apartment were a mattress, a kettle, some cutlery and a radio. This song was played on "Tapestry", a CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) weekly radio show that examines various aspects of spirituality. It moved me very much at the time (and still does) because of how it examines loss, growing up and acknowledging one's mistakes (whether real or perceived). When I got back to Vancouver, I bought the CD. This song "Chicago" is but one of the many songs on this album that explore many aspects of the human experience, with a particular emphasis on parts of Illinois's history. The best way to get Marvin’s message is to sit back and listen to the entire album start to finish and you will realize Marvin wrote & produced a true Masterpiece which is still true today.
