The way that Nick and Fred are right before this scene makes you think about how dangerous Nick potentially is because he was the one who won the campaign for Gilead in beginning, its why they sent him to the front in Chicago, he must be badass intimidating because although Fred was a high ranking commander, he didn't protest too much and yes i know that Nick had a gun, but I don't think he would of shot Fred, so makes you think that Fred really knew that Nick was potentially higher up in the Gilead system than even Fred, even though Nick is a driver he was also in charge of the eyes, so i think that he may of outranked Fred even though it isn't really shown up until that moment, he didn't have a lot of the same clearance access that Fred had etc, but he still helped found Gilead and it shows in that scene with Fred when he stays we'll stay here sir, it's safer inside, there's unspoken understandings in quite a few scenes in the handmaid's tale, like with Rita and Nick right after Fred ran upstairs, she gave him a look like hes about to find out and he goes up to stop him calling for a search party, these types of unspoken scenario's in this that are just with a look, are how the resistance have managed to keep going and trust each other in a very dangerous place

I wasn't sure in the first few episodes, but their love story grew into something so pure it surprised even me of how much I rooted for them <3 Their chemistry is wow, every time he sees her it's like he wants to be consumed completely but knows he can't.
