Video Outline: - 2:38: Background - Summarizes a lot of content from her PhD dissertation, including biographical details and her method of tracking transposition levels by fifth. - 4:10: Example 1, “Pianissimo” from Trois Etudes (1914) - A symmetric transpositional path is observable in this work. - 8:30: Roslavets’s Middle Period (late 1910s to late 1920s) - Many compositions for voice and piano - More non-chord tones in his work - An expressive device to express Russian symbolist poetry - The material discussed in this section of the video correlates to Bazayev’s chapter of Analytical Approaches to 20th-Century Russian Music, “Fifth’s Paths Through Nikolai Roslavets’s Three Poems of Zinaida Gippius. - There is a lack of symmetry in the last of the three songs which contributes to its dark expressive implications. - This works in conjunction with the non-chord tones, which are accented in octaves in the piano part - 20:10: Conclusion - Bazayev makes a connection between the dark ending of the cycle with Roslavets’s own life. - Call to action to give more attention to Roslavets’s music

Roslavets was prosecuted by the Soviet regime. When he died, milice went to his flat and deleted many scores? His family had an heroic action to save all what could be saved? The expression of this score is both heroic and lyrical and the harmonic writing does not go so far than in some piano sonatas, but my God what a maestria !.

If the overplayed quartet no.4 which also doesn't sound "contemporary" can have a place in such a Contemporary Music Festival, why don't give Lyatoshynsky's string quartet no.1 a shot?

How wonderful would it be if Lyatoshynsky's first quartet can be recorded! It has been ruthlessly ignored for decades and people would rather prefer exploring the 3rd quartet which in my opinion is just an atonal experiment going awry. It's clear why Lyatoshynsky didn't head down the atonal path because as the third quartet shows it's probably worthless in his opinion.

Це був потрясаючий фестиваль! UCMF та засновниця - Leah Batstone неймовірні! Професійний і фаховий рівень був на найвищій сходинці, три дні не зупинялася Українська музика. Композитори, критики, музиканти… New York Times писало статті! Це найбільше свято сучасної Української музики в Північній Америці!

A beautiful composition-and interesting title of which I'm not quite sure to make 😌-by the great Silvestrov, and a lovely interpretation by pianist Anna Shelest. The melding of elements of earlier music and 20th c. compositional ideas is not always pulled off well, but of course, in this piece, it is, superbly. And the tender but subtly haunting ending-especially at this time-is particularly compelling. On what was going to be a special day for me this year (in 2022), I was up at 12:34 a.m. (my local time in North America) and decided to check the news before trying to sleep, as I'd been desperately worried about your country, Ukraine. So horribly, the very first reports of the invasion had just come in, and my heart immediately and thoroughly shattered. As a collegial (though not Ukrainian) artist, I want to share that every artist of every type (visual, musical, performance art, etc.) whom I know, not only in the major metropolitan area where I live, but far beyond, too-we have been in a state of shock, outrage, and mourning for all we see and know (through journalists) that is horrendously happening to you, your cherished relatives, your loved ones-all aspects of your lives-in your brave (and now so horrendously wrongly tortured) country. Many of us, including I, have tried to quickly plan exhibitions, chamber-music concerts, etc., to honor and raise funds for Ukraine. I'm sorry many of us have failed as of yet-we become so sad, overwhelmed by what is happening to you, and then, even more despairing as we realize that our horror and grief is of the tiniest fraction of all you are experiencing. But we will continue our efforts, I promise. Your country's exceptional music-not "just" that of Silvestrov, Skoryk, Frohlyak, Homelska, Shymko, etc.-but also that of far too many other great Ukrainian composers-and performers-to mention here, is a testament to your rich culture, your vast and beautiful spirit that must be helped to endure (somehow-only God knows how) these horrors-and to thrive, in peace, again.
