This is Amonasro's great introduction and scene, but Milnes is not here. The baritone is not only, not in the right color makeup to impress and to unsettle the Egyptians with his magnificent presence, his stature is small and unimpressive. His voice matches his appearance. He looks like any other white guy on stage. Is he Egyptian or Roman ? After seeing and hearing Milnes you can imagine the Egyptians not wanting to meet Amonasro on the battlefield. The king of Egypt is not fooled. He knows another majestic ruler when he sees one. This Amonasro is basically a messenger with a messenger's voice and bearing.

Sounds good, but visually, no. The initial impression of the staging is good, but interest fades. The dressing is too heavy and when everyone is on stage it just looks cluttered. Direction is slack, with much of the movement designed more to getting an attractive but static stage rather than advancing the story. The grand march with the crowd waving at an imagined parade is perhaps a solution for a stage that isn't very large, but looks faintly ludicrous. And I don't think I've ever seen a chorus more bored with the proceedings, not helped by uninspired video direction. However, musically the singing is good, with well-recorded audio for both on-stage and for the orchestra. In summation, ultimately an Aida to be listened to, rather than watched.

Sadly, my thoughts are the opposite. Agreeing that the production is at times over-produced, this is still a production to see, and not hear. I doesn't sound good.

Bravissimi, la musica di Domenico Bartolucci non è abbastanza eseguita, nonostante senza tema di smentite egli sia l'ultimo grande musicista del XX secolo e - ahinoi - l'ultimo di una grande razza di compositori che non sappiamo se mai si ripeterà nella storia.
