The all-star keyboardist Herbie Hancock. Mongo Santamaria had the biggest hit with in the Sixties; but Herbie also knocks it out the park with his own version in the Seventies, on his grand-slam "Headhunters" album. (Ouch! Too many baseball references?)

No matter what song Big Mama tackled, she made it her own. Case in point, the 1962 Herbie Hancock composition Watermelon Man. Artists as varied as Herbie, Dexter Gordon & Freddie Hubbard, or Mongo Santamaria played it, but Big Mama made you want to grab a hunk of that sweet watemelon and - m-m-m - eat it all up. A talent as big as the lady herself. Never an artist since with such a deep-down grasp of song.

So Joplin admits Big Mama was an influence OK..but lets not get carried away. She was a half ass R and B singer but she could move a crowd with a lot of emotion. She aint even close to Big Mama.

Every one is not going to have good taste, i get that ,but the youngsters that i know who think the new bad music is good music just dont know any better. There is always good, even great music being made. Now its just harder to find.No fight with you, just tired of oldheads blaming kids instead of raising them.Peace.

I can only say base on talking to some younger kids that is the case. By no means all, but a lot younger kids, feel that music is better today. in many cases ( not all ) they even feel that way, even their parents play nothing but, classic Rock, Blues, and Jazz. For what if worth, I love classic jazz, by the. Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, Billy Holiday, Charlie Parker, Count Basie, Ella, You can't beat it. Any way, who cares what I like.

Yes it is true. I wasnt just talking about Big Mama Thornton or ever the blues. There are all kinds of GREAT music. The beatles, motown, George Clinton, James Brown, Sam Cooke David Bowie Queen the list goes on and on. Tell me about the kid who has listened to these great talents and thinks that someone like beiber is on that level.

That's not true. Many people have grown listening to this kind music, but yet they do not like it. That's just the way it is, sometimes.
