Been collecting LEGO since I was five, so about 30 years now! I love so many different themes. I had little sets of so many different themes that it felt chaotic to display. So what I’ve done is limited myself and parted out a lot of my bulk lot, sorted it, and now focus on one theme at a time. Right now my focus has been on Blacktron II sets. I have all but one. Loving the hunt on eBay and local resale shops. Subscribed! Looking forward to following your journey, and will one day document mine!

11:51 first try to identify sets by the built chunks! Some sets are relatively easy to identify based on rare or unique parts or stickers, but many are very hard or impossible to identify in that way. If you want to figure out what sets are included, try to identify built chunks before you disassemble them. Trust me, it’s _way_ easier.

I have tried many different systems and ways from plastic bags to Alex drawers. For me, anything that has to be opened like a box with lid or bag doesn’t work for me. Also, with the large drawers, individual containers are very desirable. I like to be able to removable to take to build table. The ease of putting pieces in their proper place and extract them is paramount. If I have to open a container to put one piece in it, I most likely won’t put it away until I have a mess of misc parts lying around. That’s my number one priority. Easy to retrieve and put parts away. If I get a bunch of different pieces and I have to open a bunch of lids or bags then the friction of part sorting grinds to a stop.

I do like the look of the sorted drawer, but I also see some potential issues. I think you should actually test it with colours for which you don’t have so many pieces, before committing to it. - Will it still make sense to sort piece by piece, or will you have to group things together again. - The second issue I see is that the dividers are sitting loose in the bins and I already spotted cases where bricks were getting under the dividers. This will probably get worse with colours for which you mainly have small pieces (e.g. floral elements).

I found that figuring out ur organization and sorting is actually quite enjoyable as long as u have places to put it all. We both know that the way we use storage will change and evolve as our collections grow and it is easier to keep keep it under control once its in control so it is best to get it under control at the beginning of ur collection journey when it isn't so massive.

Generally speaking, the smaller the part the more I separate them. For example, 2x2, plates all colours go together in a shoe box size clear bin, same for 2x3 plates, 2x4 plates etc. 1x2 plates get sorted in about 12 small drawers with light and dark grey, each have their own drawer and less common colours share drawers with contrasting colours. Same for 1x3 plates, 1x4 plates etc. Once I get to 1x10 and 1x12 plates, one or two drawers is enough. Bricks follow similar logic but for 1x2 Bricks, neutral colours go in one shoe box and primary colours in another. The main thing is staying flexible so as your inventory grows, adding drawers or shoe boxes is easy to do.

@JJJBricks 13 күн бұрын
I think that’s great. And honestly that may be where we end up. I sort of do that now with varying consistency between parts. It works pretty well, but wanted to try something else more spicy and maybe silly hahaha. But yes, smaller pieces is best practice for keeping separate

U would think that someone would have made "the perfect" storage solution for Lego with Lego being the thing that was thought about while designing it(even though it could work for many other things). And drawer systems should have smaller compatible spacers/dividers/trays that help break a space down into smaller areas. I will say that u should make those a lil bigger cause its irritating to get a part out of the smaller areas when ur fingers don't fit easily. I have been through this with the lil tackle/beads divider containers u can buy at craft stores

Amateur here - but I have been sorting lego for 3 months now after finally getting room to dust off legos that have been in storage for 20 years. I'm sorting mainly by type, and it seems fairly easy to locate the right color even when mixed. For parts I have loads of (standard lego), I'm putting two colors in each bin - with nice contrast. Doing black/white, red/blue, gray/brown, orange/tan and yellow/green. All shades of a color sorted with their main color. I cannot have too many containers. Picking parts out of your drawers looks a little painful with sausage fingers, and with nany small containers you'll probably need many many overflow containers, because amounts vary heavily.

As much as I appreciate the organization, I really try to stay away from dividers to sort most Lego parts. I dislike fishing for small pieces repeatedly in small openings. You cannot dump them out if you need several since the whole container would dump. I wonder if it would work using less dividers and combining same small parts in a color family (eg all shades of grey). Definitely harder to keep inventory (as you may need for a Bricklink store) but easy to pull whole container out and have parts accessible- in fact, you may want different shades of grey when working on rock work for example. Of course, just my opinion and do whatever works best for you :)

@JJJBricks 18 күн бұрын
Unfortunately I don't have time to help you find all the parts, but Bricklink is the best place to start. I also only spent $90 USD becuause I had so many parts in my collection already. Yes, starting from zero would be much more expensive. Plus I swapped a few parts here and there if I didn't have a piece that I felt was too important to save money. I just went through the parts list on Bricklink and started pulling what I had in my collection first and putting all the parts I didn't have into a wanted list. It takes some time to move stuff around within Bricklink wanted lists to find the best prices. It is tedious and takes time I'm afraid. So it really comes down to time vs cost and which is worth more to you. Good luck!
