I think there are 2 more that connect the front bed to the rear of the bed. I haven't used these and don't think it decreases the strength or safety of the trailer when assembled in this way. The rear section is attached to the front through the hinges, and to the axle through the bolts I added in this video.

I also would like to know if its possible to somehow add a second axle to these? If you are putting weight on them then at some point someone might think that they might want extra support.
@maetb10 ай бұрын
I think you might be able to put a heavier duty axle and springs on, but honestly I doubt the frame is strong enough to handle twice the load of what it is designed for. If you are looking to carry much heavier loads, it would be safer to start with a different trailer

I almost bought a maverick hybrid but I don't really need a truck. Mayne only once or twice a year to go to home depot and do diy home projects. Should I buy a foldable utility trailer instead and add a hitch to my Nissan leaf so I can haul stuff whenever I need it??
@maetb Жыл бұрын
It would certainly be less expensive than a new vehicle, and can carry 4x8 sheets of plywood. A truck is probably easier to use because you always have the bed, where with a trailer you have to get it out and set up. There is also the extra registration (in my state at least), and the initial setup (adding a hitch, assembling the trailer, etc.)

I have a sloping driveway, and realized the folded trailer with tongue in the air is just a few inches higher than my garage ceiling is tall. I can still unfold it in there but it's definitely precarious unfolding the tongue and tilting it forward at the same time. How's the paint holding up?
@maetb Жыл бұрын
Paint is ok - I store it inside mostly, but have left it outside for stretches. That will definitely affect the life of the finish

Whats the weight on this will it fit in the back of a truck.going to bike week and hotels wont allow trailers?
@maetb Жыл бұрын
I think this would be too big to fit in a truck bed, but there are smaller ones. All assembled with the plywood deck this probably weighs 300lbs, which would also be a challenge to get in a truck bed

Helpful video. I was curious how much space it took up in the garage since I don't have a ton available. I'm also laughing at all the comments worrying about you smashing a toe. I wonder how many of them wear steel-toed boots when working around the house. Because if they think the thin cloth on the top of a pair of sneakers is going to protect them any more than nothing at all they are in for a shock when they drop something on their toe.

Very nice! How about up hills for average of 10 minute? How does it do on a two hour drive?
@maetb2 жыл бұрын
When I tow it from home to the lake, it's 2 hours and it does just fine. I don't think I have done a 10 minute hill. I did plug in an OBDII reader to get real-time temperatures on the transmission fluid and it was good. I probably wouldn't tow long distances if it was 90°F+, but it might be ok, I am just a little cautious
@jordanricker49489 ай бұрын
My brother in law did a 6 hour tow in a 2010 Outback 2.5L cvt with a beetle and 1960s trike on a double axle car trailer from upstate NY to Tennessee and has a background in construction and has towed LOTS of loaded down trailers with full size pickups and while he didn't have high expectations he was VERY impressed by the Subarus performance. I've driven Subarus for DECADES and was still impressed. It was well beyond what that car was rated to tow. To this day it STILL sees regular hard use. HOWEVER, she gets the trans fluid changed every 50,000 miles due to hard use. Has made it 250,000 miles and is STILL going strong.

I built the Harbor Freight HD trailer (1750 lb. rated) primarily haul my motorcycle, but for other things as well. This will be the third HF trailer I've built (1st the 4x4, then the 4x8, bot used for camping, moving things, Home Depot runs, and green waste. For the deck, I used 'quality-grade' 3/4" plywood that I treated with COPPER GREEN wood preservative, then primer, and finally painted black using premium-grade' exterior paint with non-slip additive. I also wanted my trailer to fold and didn't like the 'cheapy' little casters, so I replaced those with better, high-rolling ones. To keep the bed as versatile as possible, I used a recessed wheel chock (that folds down level with the bed) and added the Haulmaster e-Track system down the left and right edges of the bed, along with some eye-hooks at the corners. Another KZbin poster added foldable legs underneath at the rear for stability when loading (that I'll be adding as well). When I make the side rails, my plan is to add a small LED spot light on the front rail pointed toward the bed that will use the 12v trailer power so I can see at night. Needless to say, depending on what the trailer will be used for, there's a plethora of things you can incorporate, making this a pretty good solution to the needs of those in need of a trailer.
@dustsmoke Жыл бұрын
How did you fit e-Tracks with 3/4th plywood and still fold it up all the way?
@gregweir4072 Жыл бұрын
@@dustsmoke I wanted them along the outer edge of the deck, so I placed them where I wanted them (on the wood), making sure the steel frame wasn't directly below. Once exactly where I wanted them, I used a 3/8" drill bit and drilled through the wood. Then I had bolts long enough to go through the e-Tracks and the plywood and used big fender washers and Teflon lock nuts to secure them. It's quite easy actually.
@dustsmoke Жыл бұрын
@@gregweir4072 What I meant is, does it still fold flat/flush or does all that stuff get in the way of it folding up all the way? I've been having to counter bore, counter sink, and recess / route out everything into the floor to keep mine completely foldable with 22/32. I want those etracks but I don't want to remove as much floor material as I think I'd need to just to keep it folding up all the way.

@maetb2 жыл бұрын
It tows fine, though not speedily. The mileage drops from about 30mpg to about 18 when towing this boat, so you tell it's working harder. I've towed this boat a few times a year for 8 years, and the car is doing well at 190k miles with no major issues thus far, so I would say it's up to the task

Did you build the trailer? I'm building mine right now. In the intructions it shows putting 2 bolts through the center cross members??? Which would mean 4 bolts to put in and take out to fold/unfold. Also it seems and I'm going to have to bring in my instructions ... the bracket for the axel and spring also seems to bolt to the back frame???? Hope you're still around ... I had to stop and take a break last night because nothing in the instructions is clarifying how much do I have to bolt / unbolt to fold / unfold normally. So I'm sitting here thinking I've put the damn thing together wrong.
@maetb2 жыл бұрын
There are a lot of comments here, but if you read through there are some conversations about how I do not use the bolts that attach the front section to the back because it would make folding more difficult, and I don't think they add much strength. I do bolt the rear section to the axle section after unfolding.
@johnjacobjinglehimerschmid35552 жыл бұрын
@@maetb I did notice you putting the 2 bolts in the side of the axle section. But I didn't see you insert the carriage type bolts underneath the springs ... Thanks for getting back on this. There are times that I over think things.

The usable width is just under 48" because of the bolts for the hinges. If you can raise what you are carrying about the hinges, you should be able to get something 50" wide on there
