The potato berries form rarely on most potato varieties that are available - the flowers naturally fall off before the berries are formed most times. This happened with all 7 varieties of certified seed potatoes I planted this year. All of them flowered, with no berries. I am also growing 'Clancy' potato plants from seed, and these have produced a couple of berries that I will take at the end of the season and use to get more plants next year. :) They're on round 2 of flowering, so maybe I'll have a few more berries! I think that the seeds are the plan A choice of reproduction for plants as they have the advantage of genetic diversity. The tubers are plan B as they are clones of the original plant. For human use, we prefer the predictability and crop of the potatoes, but it is still exciting to grow from seed as you never quite know what you will get haha. Also, storage of the seeds is easy compared to seed potatoes - you save seed the same way you save tomato seed!

Just subscribed . :) Am on the other side of Lake Ontario, in Canada. I have been growing a few trays of fall veggie plantings, and think I have made a mistake for a couple cabbage varieties - am growing a couple of 60/70 day varieties, but also the longer 90/100 day storage ones lol. I started those 1st/2nd week of June, but if I'm counting down the days from transplant, I might be in trouble! Guess I'll hope the fall stretches a for a while more this year. :p It is always very warm here in August though, and previously my fall brassicas have bolted early due to the heat. So I have ordered some shade cloth to protect the brassicas from the late afternoon sun. How do you manage the hot late summer weather when you plant out?
