So, how can I cut the thick ones without having so many coming out of the ground?

I'm sorry, I don't quite understand your question. Could you elaborate please?

Thank you. I live in New England and just bought a house with a lilac that is about 15’ tall. It flowered pretty well this year. Once the blossoms are gone I want to cut out the dead wood but how far back should I cut the live wood? 3’ to 5’?

It all depends. If it's a large, HEALTHY bush, you don't want to cut much. Once these are full bushes, I will only cut back to control height. I don't like ladders, so mine will not go taller than 6 feet. If it's TOO healthy, it will start to grow stringy, so just trimming it back a bit maintains the ratio of root/bush. The real goal with these is to have a web of bush above ground, and a web of root below that's the same.

Can you propagate from an old (approx 6 yr old) raspberry bush the same way?

Yes, you absolutely can. Most perennial bushes can be propagated the same way. Thanks for commenting, I'm glad it helped! 😁

The hardest part in the garden is getting the ground ready for the first time the second hardest part is keeping up with the weeds
