It would be great if you have a detailed video on using midimaping. Not how to map but more about workflow. I wonder if you map a filter on a knob on novation circuit tracks (or rhythm) do you need to remap it if you swap the synth in the app. Could it be setup like a NI Maschine workflow - when you have software synths and you control them from a hardware device without remaping every time.
@toskabyss10 күн бұрын
Sheesh that is a great question! I sold my circuit rhythm but I believe it retains the mapping. There is an advanced midi mode in gadget that allows you to select the specific input midi channel for each gadget. My thought would be if you move to track 1 on the circuit it would send the midi mapping for that gadget. If you select channel 2 on circuit it should send the midi map info to the next gadget. Not sure if the midi learn follows. I suspect it does!

I feel that. I recently got super into Synth1 - if you haven’t used it, it’s a Nord Lead 2 emulation from 2002. Interesting because it’s an emulation of virtual analog. Sort of a copy of a copy. I'm a recovering software guy who is on the verge of relapse. I recently started playing with the Reason Rack plugin - I have all these proprietary synths that I bought for Reason 13 years ago before I knew how synths worked. If some of these were virtual analog hardware I'd pay sooo much money. We need to have a conversation about Synth1 as well at some point. Glad to see you are safe down there with all this hurricane business man!
@JannisLeWolff28 күн бұрын
Such an interesting topic! I often look at my midi controllers and think: there must be a smooth way of creating like the most amazing set-up with only the controls I need. A set-up way more powerful than any hardware synth you could buy, because you can create the controls you need and ignore all modulation options you don't use anyways. But then I'm so intimidated to start, because midi mapping and figuring out technical problems is like the least musical feeling thing I could think of 😅 still, it gives you great results if you go through it. But most of the time I'm actually thankful that hardware gives me a limited frame to work with. I feel like accepting the limitations of hardware makes me more productive, because I don't start to question everything. Currently I'm trying to make simple and short live recorded songs with the Nord Drum, no editing possible, and it's so liberating. I prefer hardware though that can make full tracks, instead of just one sound, so you can have independent channels/tracks. That's kind of my personal criteria for the question whether it's worth the investment or not. Thanks for bringing up this topic 💚
@toskabyss27 күн бұрын
Hey my friend thanks for the thoughtful comment. I LOVE the idea of a hardware instrument that has a few macro controls on the top panel and having a hidden panel below that has an infterface like the NordDrum. I actually ment to send you a message about this haha. I love this idea of having a poly synth that has a hidden panel (like the CS-80) and under the panel it is a simple layout like the Nord Drum - calculator display - simple navigation. On the top panel you can map up to 4 parameters to each macro knob. One knob could control spectra and amp decay at once. Another knob could control release time and reverb amount and distortion. So the synth would basically have two modes - Patch design mode - then you close the little panel - Play mode. I try to do this with Ableton where I group a VST and map a bunch of parameters to macros. Then I close the view of the grouped instrument to just the macros. Great exploration with limitation! I love the work you do with the Faderfox EC4. I love how programable that device is. I feel like that could take VSTs to the next level.

Good analog and specifically vintage synthesizers have many drawbacks. They are expensive, require regular and complex maintenance, need ample space and are not easy to transport for gigs, among other challenges. However, they have one key advantage where they outshine software synthesizer emulations: sound. Don’t get me wrong as soft synths can achieve things that hardware synths cannot, and ultimately, it all comes down to personal preference. But when comparing the sound of vintage analog synths to software emulations, there is still a noticeable difference in most of them, both technically and aesthetically and it can be explained. Unfortunately, your "pocket Polysix" doesn’t sound quite like the real thing. I have them both compared to each other and it is not hard to tell that. Arguments like "who can tell in a mix if you use vst or analog" are flawed, because the best source should ideally be your first choice when starting your composition and instrumentation. Also to make clear again this is not a "hardware vs software" issue here but more a "vintage analog vs vintage analog emulations". Keep up the nice work and thank you.
@toskabyss27 күн бұрын
I super appreciate that insight! I have to agree that the iPolysix doesn't sound as good as the real deal. There is certainly a little bit of "the thing" that happens when playing and recording the hardware. However, this may have just been my model - it was SOOOOO noisy. It was really aesthetic in some ways, but in a lot of cases it was unwanted and by the time the track was being limited and mastered it was too much. With some of the vintage stuff I also would run into silly things like clock issues via midi. I hate the KiwiSix mod on my Polysix and I just couldn't get some things to work - there was way less headache with something like my Prologue. I def think both have their place. I appreciate the idea of defining New Hardware vs Vintage Hardware vs Modern Software vs Vintage Emulation. A lot of variables, pros and cons there. I like this idea of having one beautiful poly that would cover as many bases as possible and also prevent me from buying overlapping tools.
@christopherjanzen27 күн бұрын
@@synthlifeforever I don’t know that I fully agree. I do agree when comparing a soft synth to an existing hardware synth that there are often some shortcomings or variances but those aren’t necessarily bad, just different. But when you look at soft synths that aren’t emulations of existing hardware, I think it’s hard to say that soft synths don’t sound as good! I’d be more inclined to say that hardware stands out for me as a relationship that I can form with its particular character and interface that just doesn’t happen the same way with software. That tactile connection to hardware is difficult to replicate with software unless you have a dedicated controller that mimics the interface.
