Hi Adi. Thanks for your comment. The club holds their model railway running meetings once a month and occasionally bring my models there for a good run. The 6 wheel coaches are mine and these are suitable for my Met No.1 loco. The A3 Flying Fox and the 31 are mine and they run good on their layout. Thanks for watching. All the best... Rob 🙂

Well done on your ten years at "you tube", and a great top 10 with a good selection of prototypes, but a 4w railbus at number 1? I suppose I am not surprised really, it is a nice looking prototype, and the model runs well. I have travelled on the K&WVR and NNR on these, and they were memorable runs, nice to relive on Shedley Wood, look forwards to the next video.

Hi Adi and good morning to you too, thanks for watching and commenting . Yes the weather was good over the weekend been quite wet and miserable the last few weeks. The older models are more reliable than the latest ones where details break off and dodgy motors burning. The J70 is a fab model and the first Rapido Trains UK product I bought. It has been 10 years on KZbin from the 13th May and I'm planning to do a couple of special videos to mark this occasion which will be the Top 10 most run trains and Top 10 favourite trains, these will be uploaded soon. Also I would like to say thank you for being a loyal subscriber and friend for the past ten years with your help and support as well as other subscribers. Many thanks and take care, all the best ....Rob🙂

ON THE SLIPPERY SLOPE TO KIDDY FANTASY LAND ???? Not impressed, the standard of layouts today is becoming appalling. And this is the major London show !!!! Jerky jittery locomotives, inaccurate signalling, inaccurate train formations due to ignorance of the many rules covering railways. Forbidden train movements, childish and unrealistic gimmicks in all directions. Indeed no real comprehension in many cases of how to operate exhibition layouts. This is made far worse by idiots who are unaware that "DCC" electrically pays absolutely no heed to any European Railway Block Signalling systems, because it is wired for the American Market & U.S. CTC (Radio instructions to move), a system banned in Europe on Safety grounds ! One of the biggest DCC operational issues is the fact you can have head on crashes, which is of course not possible when you have traditional 12v DC in the rails. So another clear indication you cannot interface DCC with any type of European Block Signalling system including British, Absolute Block; Track Circuit Block; Permissive Block; Single Track Token Block or even Electric Token Block. A couple of examples of "Operational rules" in BR days:- ex GWR & LMS designed corridor coaching stock cannot be coupled to ex SR/LNER/Pullman or BR corridor stock as they have different couplings, buffers & Gangway connections. Unless specialised "Adaptor Plates" were fitted to the BSS gangway ends, which meant this was rare, being an operational nuisance. Many ex GWR coaches also banned from other Regions because of their "Loading Gauge". And GWR four cylinder locos also banned from virtually the whole SR, parts of the Midland & much of the Eastern & Scottish Regions again due to "Loading Gauge" issues. BR wagon rules: "Unfitted" wagons must be coupled behind any "fitted" wagons to ensure the biggest "fitted head" possible. Purely "unfitted" freights (class 9) limited to 30mph. Further wagons fitted with Air brakes couldn't run in vacuum braked trains, or with steam locos !!! So most of today's "Model Railway" shows have degenerated to the level of childish Fantasy World toy train set shows. About the only decent shows left seem to be the specialist shows such as "Scaleforum". The P4 Society 18.83mm gauge, show !!! As I'm an ex BR Senior Mechanical Engineer who's worked on various railways around the World, I obviously have a very good idea of the very complex manner of everything a Railway requires in order to operate safely. All of which I apply to my hobby of "Model Railways" and the many exhibition layouts I've built down the years, and had published in magazines from Britain to Japan !

THE SOUTHERN "HORNBY's" & THEIR HEADCODES ! The models certainly look nice. And as there are quite a few posts on KZbin already showing these models they must be proving popular. But ALL the Posts so far show the models fitted with 6 white Headcode Discs which NEVER happened when the locos were in service. So I expect there must be some mistake in the instruction sheet about these Headcodes ??? The SR used a 6 position headcode system unlike the other Railways which had the standard 4 position method, which described the trains CLASS. On the SR the 6 position system described the trains ROUTE (not CLASS) due to the complexity of the Southern network. So for example One White Disc on the centre bufferbeam lampbracket, was a common Headcode allocated to at least a dozen different branchlines right across the whole Southern Railway/BR Southern Region. But NO Headcode on ANY Division used more than FOUR white Discs, and the ONLY Headcode using Four was reserved for Royal trains, on ALL 3 Divisions ! A common Headcode seen on the "Hornby's" was of course the Victoria to Newhaven Harbour Boat trains (via Quarry line). The Headcode being just two Discs (or lamps at night). These being fitted on the left hand lower position & the left Middle position. NOTE: For those unsure about what Headcodes were used on the Southern. The best website with accurate information on all things Southern including the "Hornby's" (Class 70) many photos and Headcodes is the SOUTHERN RAILWAY EMAIL GROUP (SREmG).

DRIVING THE WORLDS RAREST TRAIN !!! Class 33/1 locos could work with the 4TC's & most other BR designed EMU's. For example the 17.30 & 18.30 departures from Waterloo were formed of 2x 4VEP a 4TC & the Class 33/1 diesel at the rear. Total horsepower 3,550 ! These trains being probably the only TWIN TRACTION power trains in the World, as both Diesel & Electric power is being used in one train simultaneously. The Class 33/1 Diesel locos, had to be altered so they would respond properly when operated from the much more limited power handle in an EMU which only has 5 settings. (Off; Shunt; Series; Parallel & Weak Field). So it was rather fun trying to start these EMU/Diesel loco trains. On EMU's it was quite normal to Whack the power handle fully open to start, & an EMU would start virtually instantly drawing a whopping 3200 AMPS to start. But the Diesel at the rear had other ideas. As it takes around 7 seconds for the Diesel engine to run up the revs high enough to generate the necessary amperage to feed its traction motors to begin moving. With 2x4VEP (1000 hp per unit) they would actually start dragging the non powered 4TC & the Diesel loco into motion and begin accelerating. Indeed after 7 seconds the train would be doing 10mph & the leading 4 cars were already out of the platform, when the Diesel loco decided to join the party and add its extra 1,550hp. At this moment you got a large thrust from the rear and acceleration suddenly increased. Only problem was the speed limit for the whole train through the complex pointwork leaving Waterloo was 15mph. So you had to brake a little. Once out of the station the speed limit was 40mph round the sharp curves to Vauxhall after which the limit increased to 75mph. So giving the train the whole 3,550hp after passing Vauxhall meant it would reach the 75mph max hacking through Queenstown Road a mile or so further on. Indeed you had to slow down for the 45mph curve through Clapham Junction. After which you just kept the power full on, and by Wimbledon you could be doing 80mph. Despite the Class 33's being officially 85mph max you could be doing 90mph at Surbiton, as the EMU's being 90mph max officially would often reach 95 or even 100mph without trouble. The Diesel if fitted with a speed limiter, simply meant the actual engine would go back to tick over, and not provide any more power. But the 2,000hp in the EMU'S was enough to keep the speed at at least 90mph. And if the Diesel wasn't restricted you could be hacking through Walton on Thames at 95-100mph. At Weybridge you could shut off and happily coast the next 4 miles to the Woking stop. These two trains (17,30 & 18.30) stopped only at Woking & then Basingstoke, where the trains divided. The front 8cars (the two 4VEP's) then went all stations to Southampton, while the 4TC & Class 33/1 went all stations to Salisbury. That of course was in the days of BR.

THE CLASS 33/1 & IT'S SPECIAL REAL & MODEL FITTINGS !!! The "Crompton" Class 33/1 was of course modified in 1966 to this "Push-Pull" variant to work with the 4TC units which despite being Electric Stock had NO motors of their own. Not only does the loco have the "Bagpipes" as you call it. These being high level Brake pipe; Main Reservoir pipe & 42 way EMU electrical jumper. It also has the necessary "Pullman Rubbing Bar" between its Retractable buffers & above the necessary Semi-Automatic Buckeye coupling. (None of which is found on standard Class 33's) ! THE SEMI-AUTO BUCKEYE COUPLING & RETRACTABLE BUFFERS The Semi-Automatic Buckeye coupling was necessary to couple with all BR designed EMU's. Being a rigid fixed length coupling with an opening jaw (unlike the normal "Screw Link" fitted to locos which is a flexible chain type coupling) The distance between vehicles is Fixed. Which means the normal side buffers are NOT required when a Buckeye is in use. Indeed the normal side buffers must NOT be allowed to touch the buffer on the next vehicle or derailments WILL occur in sharp corners & pointwork. So the buffers fitted have to be of the Retractable type, & MUST be in the retracted position when the Buckeye is in use. NOTE: If a Buckeye fitted vehicle has to be coupled to something without a Buckeye. Then the Buckeye must be "dropped" on its hinge, which will reveal a standard coupling hook hidden behind. At which time the side buffers must be pulled out into the "Extended Position" to allow them to operate in the traditional manner. THE SEMI-RIGID PULLMAN GANGWAY Because of the Buckeye rigid coupling fitted as standard to BR EMU's, BR Mk1 coaches, Southern Railway Corridor Stock, LNER Corridor stock & Pullman coaches. The Gangway Connection on all these types HAS to be of the Pullman semi-rigid type, to allow for the rigid length Buckeye beneath !!! The Pullman semi-rigid Gangway does NOT couple physically to its counterpart, so it has wide "rubbing plates" around its edge (clearly visible on you models) that simply rub & slide against the face of the adjoining Gangway. Not clearly visible is the secret of this Gangway type. The floor section of this Gangway hides hydraulic rams behind the rubbing plate, which act to provide the more powerful buffing needed between Buckeye & Pullman Gangway fitted stock. This is only apparent on a model by two bulges (one each side) along the lower edge of the Rubbing faceplate. PULLMAN RUBBING BAR Because of this hydraulic buffing in the floor section of Pullman Gangways, the Class 33/1's had to have the "Pullman Rubbing Bar" (just the floor section of a Pullman Gangway) fitted between their Retractable Buffers to prevent damage during running. This Pullman Rubbing Bar also has the two bulges, one each side, along the lower edge of this rubbing faceplate. The bulges hide the actual hydraulic rams behind. NOTE: LMS and GWR Did NOT use Buckeye couplings on any of their stock, so did NOT use the Pullman type gangway either. Instead they stuck with the traditional Screw Link coupling & the older "British Standard Suspension" (BSS) gangway. This type of Gangway is flexible and works by the "Concertina" method. When viewed on an LMS or GWR model you will notice the BSS gangway sticks out further than the Pullman type, is narrower & has a semi-circular top. It also in real life has brackets & suspension chains that hook to each side of the Gangway to stop it flopping about. Further being flexible it had to be physically connected to the gangway on the next vehicle to ensure no gaps appeared around its edge, which would otherwise be likely to kill passengers passing from carriage to carriage. When not in use these BSS Gangways were retracted and hooked back to the end of the bodyshell. (Hornby & Bachmann sometimes provide retracted BSS Gangways as accessories to fit to the first & last carriages in a train, in place of the extended version fitted to the model as supplied). UGH IT WON'T COUPLE !!! What this all means is that the two systems: Buckeye & Pullman gangway, and the Screwlink coupling with BSS Gangway COULD NOT be coupled together, without the fitting of special adaptor plates over the BSS gangway end. Which were occasionally applied to certain vehicles such as to allow an LMS Restaurant Car to be inserted into the middle of a set of BR Mk1 coaches. This normally being done in the carriage sheds.
