You final takeaway reminds me of the communities around Silent Hill 4 or Dark Souls 2. I think sometimes we’re too hard on quirky games that stand out from the rest of the series

not in the Genesis version of 2, save for the racing minigame (Genesis version was the one in Mega Collection I played as a kid). but yeah in the newer versions you can easily select Tails from the get go
