Towards the end of the 90s more and more players figured out Liu's services. Of course that was critical for him because it was his primary weapon. After a final act of force in the 99 world singles, his performance dropped dramatically. Motivation issues may also have been an issue.

the hidden services actually makes the games more attractive to watch. And also the 38mm ball. Sadly few people understand this.

All though I'm sure Ding Song has mastered every type of shot in the game, he is a chopper (defender), not an all-around player, as stated by the commentator. Great match though.

Wang Liquin had notoriously crappy return of serve. There's a match in 1999 against Kreanga and once Kreanga starts serving backhand serves to Wang's forehand he totally collapsed. As you may know it's pretty much impossible to hide the backhand serve. His short game was simply crap for the 38mm ball. He almost lost to an Australian at the 2008 Olympics because he couldn't read his tomahawk serve. Waldner wasn't even the worst match up serving wise for him 'cause he was particularly vulnerable to guys who liked to 3rd ball attack with their backhand like Wang Hao and Schlager.

@@maxk880 unfair? No it’s called a SKILL. Table tennis with a smaller ball, hidden serves required 10x more skill to play. It’s not unfair and people were actually good or bad at it. It was dumbed down to extend point length and rallies in the hopes it would bring mass appeal, which it still has not. Beyond that waldners real strength was in his point construction and strategy and variation in what he could do. The serves were just another strong point
