from thirlwall inquiry 15/1/2025. The “unusual” spike in baby deaths on the neonatal unit where Lucy Letby worked had a less than 1% probability of occurring given its previous mortality rate, a public inquiry has been told.Sir David Spiegelhalter, the emeritus professor of statistics at the University of Cambridge, said the sudden rise in deaths in 2015 was “surprising” and enough to warrant an internal investigation. However, he added that from a national perspective the increase was “not very surprising at all” and was “not extreme enough to be considered an outlier”. -------------------------------- The professor is right. (If 100 experiments are done in throwing 7 coins, it would not be surprising if in one of the experiments we get 7 heads in a a row or 7 tails in a row. This would in fact be more likely than not). But in the case of C of C hospital, the cause is known. Hasn't anyone at Thirlwall told him? A number of babies (the number has not been revealed) were moved to C of C hospital in part of 2015 and 2016, from other hospitals' NICUs which could not cope. Cof C did not itself have an NICU as far as I know. Wouldn't this account by itself for an increase in deaths? The death rate for babies in an NICU is, (It's only my guess) 50 times higher than for babies not in NICU.

The Hare with the Amber Eyes is one of my very favorite books ever. I always recommend it to people. I wish book clubs would read it again. I also am a potter and maybe thats why I so enjoyed his grand story told in the 14 minutes of this lecture where M de Waal reveals the brilliant history of the netsuke and his family.

Desirable to have an opinion? Are you nuts, there is a complete oppression and attack on any other opinions than those considered normal and common sense. It’s not different since the religious oppression of opinions, just different.

I think about this book nearly every day since I finished it in early 2024. He wrote the hell out of that book. Trouble is that I can't get anyone else to read it and I am the unofficial book recommender for a large circle of friends and family. I read The Tiger in December and, again, he wrote the hell out of that book. I am reading his oeuvre backwards because The Golden Spruce is on deck. He knows how to tell a story. He knows what the story is about and the reader never forgets it but he is able to include so much important, pertinent, and compressed information that is relevant and far-reaching. He is a rare and extraordinary storyteller with an urgent message about what it means to be alive--and what is being asked of us--at this time in history.

he did indeed write the hell out of it...perhaps to a fault. like you, I can't get anyone to borrow my copy. it's information overload for some readers. an awful thing to suggest but I wonder if a shorter, "dummed down" version would have garnered more readers?

I think you've nailed the issue at all four corners, Brother Stevenson. I have the same disappointment in endeavoring to explain why The Economy is getting steadily worse for most people: loss of savings and diminishing net ownership of assets, all while the few hoover up everything of value and hold it over the rest of our heads for ransom. A number of the people I used to be around every Sunday remind me of that "pleasant woman" you described in your talk at Robinson College a while back. "I'm comfortable", she was implying. "I'm not gonna do nothing". And I wonder what would get through. Even in a good and Midwest-nice church community overlooking the Mississippi River. I used to be Treasurer at that church. It's aging out and declining. I had already advised that "church' costs $4,000 every week, just to keep the utilities paid, the weather out of the building, and the grounds maintained. At the summer '23 Vestry (the lay governing body of the church) Retreat, I gave the usual Treasurer's report, advised that 'church' costs $4,000 a week just to keep the utilities paid, the weather out of the building and the grounds maintained, to general shock and surprise. I reminded them that fully half of the revenue to 'balance' the $600,000 budget came from earnings on the endowment funds. Then I added a couple of relevant war stories and a rejoinder that surprised even me. The punch line to the second story, which stems from an Army officer in the middle of a night in June, gathering up stray paratroopers from fields and hedgerows in Normandy, was this: "...you're scared, soldier, because you still have hope that you'll get out of this intact. But the only hope you have, Blythe, is to accept that we were all dead men the minute we stepped in to those planes. Once you accept that, then you can do your job." Then I said to my fellow congregants, "You have $7 Million in endowment funds that provide the income to keep this church afloat. If you really want to do the work we've been given to do, next year give $1 Million to one of the local agencies that are providing safe, decent housing to the growing number of poorly and completely un-housed people right here in your community. And if they do a good job with that money, give them another million the following year. The year after that, give a million to the other agency that's tackling the same problem; etc, etc, until it's all gone. Just maybe, other folks would say, 'Gosh, they really believe that gospel stuff' and take an interest. Or not, but at the end, we could all hug each other and say, 'Well done', knowing we had done the job we'd been given to do." That we could "do our job". "I'm comfortable. I ain't gonna do nothing." The folks present at that Vestry retreat politely moved on to the next agenda item, slightly stunned. After further surfacing of "I'm comfortable" sorts of entitlement that year, I packed tent and gear and left on a month's long motorcycle pilgrimage on a very vintage Triumph. And I've not been back. I'll take my paltry pledge and 'scatter the paten' at the couple of agencies that just simply feed the struggling among us. Your message, Gary, is sublime in its directness and simplicity, and in the truth that this utopian notion of an Economy that operates on a Natural Law, like gravity and rainbows refracted from raindrops, and must be obeyed, is not truth at all. That notion takes all our responsibility for each other and hands it off to just that - a notion of "not my problem - it's The Economy. I've got a holiday in the Isles planned, and (probably) a kitchen refurb." I don't know what it will take to remove The Excuse for doing nothing. But I continue to hand out your book and repeat your observations, along with those further measures of income disparity that I keep finding. I really appreciate your message, your insight, and your method of delivery. I think you're doing the work. Thanks. Tim Long, Just up the hill from Lock 15. Excuse: The skin of a reason, stuffed with a lie.

ideas and dreams are less than is necessary, where is the working model? All socialist dreams seem to point to a slime mould even amoeba surrounds its victim before devouring. to me rawlsianism seems more clear. that society should be organised such that you would be willing to take the place of the worst off. Even then you face the question of population increase that impoverishes all equally. bring me your poor, hungry and huddled masses that will swamp the ship.

Well as long as mental illness and homelessness isn't distinguished people aren't going to fix either problem. "We cant give them homes because they are mentally ill it wouldn't work"..... So rebuild the institutions for the mentally ill you shuttered in the 70s and give resource assistance to those who are able.

How can Niall Ferguson understand Tocqueville and still advocate for maximum freedom and maximum equality without responsibility, service, and duty? The only thing worse than an elite that is corrupt is one that is corrupt and incompetent. Democracy destroys men of action who are trying to better something. Niall tried to take initiative to fix his neighborhood and he felt resistance from his neighbors, townspeople, and the council. Freedom maximized is anarchy. Equality maximized is Marxism. America's ideals have an unfortunate dialectic when not restrained.
