Have the dvd on order, the sad part in all of this event, yes it changed two stroke motorcycles in the west for ever but the guy who did all the hard work designing the V4 motor from scratch was left to live in poverty in East Germany. Despite it's problems the motor was years ahead of it's time and a work of art that the Japanese capitalized on, so in fact Degner was a thief.

Just saw this in Toronto at TMFF. Not available on Apple or Prime here in Canada, or anywhere else for that matter. How can I own this so I can see it again and again? Unbelievable story and terrific production. Congrats Justin.

A thief, betraying his friend and mentor Walter Kaaden. Fine to escape totalitarian East Germany(who wouldn't want to?) but he should have done so without stolen engine parts and blue prints, the products of Kaaden's genius not his. Without those Suzuki wouldn't have been interested in him. After the defection the STASI came down heavily on Walter severely restricting his activities. He wasn't allowed to travel in the West and was under suspicion for years. Excuses and denials have been made for Degner's behaviour but a man who was there and a close friend of Walter said differently. The great Alan Shepherd was contemptuous of Degner's treachery. "I never met a man so in love with himself." Kaaden himself forgave Degner in his later life and remained loyal to his country when he could have moved to the West. Degner himself came to an early and troubled end.
