Why Bulgaria’s brutalism reached such unsurpassed aesthetics in monuments, sculpture, architecture ?

This place is a excellent, condensed example of what happened to the country after socialism. If something couldn't be sold to an oligarch, then it was just simply abandoned. Its idiotic that a place like this, considering how interesting it is, and how beautiful the location is, would be simply abandoned.

Communism produced some of the best art and architecture in the world. This monument should never have been left to rot. I'd like to see it restored fully to its former glory! I can't understand the insanity of destroying such works of art. Many communist era sculptures and art have moved away or destroyed.

I know Ceasar said it first that history is written by the victor. No argument from me here. But also history tends to swings every which way. Am not condoning communism and what they did. But its a great sadness seeing how it use to look, and how it looks now. As a Romanian, am not sure wtf we doing with the "house of the people". Maybe we should let it go to waste. Its certainly bigger and more expensive. But not as beautiful as this place. I mean, there are worse buildings in the world. That North Korean hotel comes to mind.

I can understand the degradation of those parts which have been exposed to the elements, but I'm surprised to see that the internal structures have degraded so badly. I had wondered why no rich person had bought this to use as a business centre, it would make a very impressive headquarters. I assume that the cost of renovation on that level corrosion would be prohibitive.

I’m making it my goal to become successful enough to afford a sizeable grant to fund the restoration of this monument. This is one of those pieces of architecture that are timeless as well as indicative of a world that no longer exists. It deserves to be restored and preserved for centuries to come.

Hello, as far as I'm aware the book has been re-published in 2022 and it has been sold/shipped online only within Bulgaria. The Title is - "Строи се монумент" (Monument under construction) by Бедрос Азинян (Bedros Azinyan) one of the three photographers that were working on site, and it's a photo album, with images from the construction back in the 80's. You can search - "dvetemuzi" - which is the official distributor of the book. Hope that helps. Martin

This reaffirms the ignorance and fanaticism of humans, in general. Whatever the origin of the monument, the ideology and symbolism, it shows the human capacity to undertake the construction of the monument, all over the world these are admired, the Colosseum in Rome, the Parthenon in Athens, the Great Wall of China, all of these they reflect man's ability to create great works in community to show the presence and intelligence of the human being, although this almost always clashes with the ignorance and barbarism of a good part of this human society... Albert Einstein said it a long time ago: There are two infinite things, human stupidity and the Universe, although I am not completely sure about the latter...

🇬🇧 This structure is a symbol of communist brutalism which tries, without hesitation and in a failed way, to subdue and shape Nature to its will and for its ignoble purposes. Having said that, the condition in which it finds itself after just half a century is embarrassing. This place should be restored and redeveloped as a museum, perhaps containing the history of its construction, the history of communist Bulgaria and other Eastern European Nations subjected to Soviet imperialism, as well as the aberrations and tragedies produced by the USSR. It should become a warning for the inhabitants and for the tourists... but now it is only a piece of concrete and marble thrown in the middle of the mountains.
