30 -35 years ago .. dealing with high stress - elevator maint work . Most stress came from upper management,, ( bosses of my boss). But there was a learning curve every so often. Anyway - I harvested a couple hundred ( plus cause lots have cracked). I even enlisted help from my 3 preteen daughters .. in skinning. I used whatever finish oil for slow aging.. It was a slow process of : skinning and oiling . Stap to scrap angle iron or pipe or whatever.( they would bend if not). Wait 6 months plus . Then sand smooth . Sometimes stain, then tung oil with three coats ( 50/50 oil n mineral spirits)( last coat hundred percent oil) Sometimes paracord / leather on top , sometimes dip bottom 2x in tool dip(3x Super Ball effect). Did them staff length most at shoulder . THIS WAS CHEAP AND EFFECTIVE AT DESTRESSING.. ten years I used this .. I never saw myself using these sticks.. now at 68 years old .. used a couple left overs from sales and give aways. Hip and total knees ,,, who knew I was gonna get old.

I’ve only used tung oil on ‘finishing wood’ from then on… actually even used it on first coat on deck wood ( after drying and aging a year). ( then using Australian timber oil from then on.)( 38 year old deck in back of house - lookin a well preserved three-year-old)( front deck is only 28 years old- It was solid stain, and it rotted from the bottom up). BUT I LEARNED SOMETHING FROM USING TUNG OIL OUT IN THE HOT SUN MIDDLE OF SUMMER,,, it turns the wood, nice shades of red,, not solid a different way with each piece of wood and different grains ( years) .. kinda wild. The trick is it to oil with the wood absolutely dry.. so you petrify the wood.. with it soaking in and drying. I know this is simplistic,,, I’m a simple guy. This is my travels. Simple projects… I’ve restored old toolboxes,, with tung oil .. chests that were thrown away on the side of the road.. I just do this for fun… two of my kids have repurposed them for blanket chest/ living room coffee / game tables. If it’s a piece of wood in the house I think it has my tung oil finish on it… folks need to buy it by the gallon ,,,from a wood craft shop , not big box store.
