My favorite 11 lines … for all time is, “She wrote a long letter on a short piece of paper..” At the time that was the kind of note that I fled an abusive 24 year marriage. And I lived to hear this song later and lost it. Thx Mike … even in 2023.

Mike Campbell is a class act. Back when I was first married and working in LA, I got tickets to see Mudcrutch at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. At the last minute that day, my then-manager came to me and told me I couldn't leave early for the concert; if I did, I would be fired. I turned around, told him to fuck off, and quit - I never regretted it. I had the immeasurable pleasure of seeing their final show at the Hollywood Bowl in Sept 2017; I was listening to this song in my office when one of my employees came in to tell me he had passed... I still get a tear in my eye when I remember him and the HB's RIP Tom & Howie

Yes, Mike, You, Tom and the Heartbreakers did achieve some level of immortality. I listen to your music almost daily and every time I hear a song for the nth time, I find a new color, texture, something about it that will keep me listening for decades to come. And since this is the Mudcrutch channel, let me say that Mudcrutch is what country music could and should be. Thanks.

I remember Mudcrutch . Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers to me will always be that 70s band that lived up the road. Tom Petty was one if not the one of the greatest lyricist of our time. Mr. Campbell is also a great song writer. Just ask Don Henley.

Appreciate this interview and all but I'm still 4 years later bitter that TP went out like this. Yeah ... I can relate to partaking in the green for all these years like I have (we aren't that far apart in age but unlike Tom I grew up in Calif. where all that began). The issue I have is that after seeing Howie go down like this ... how could Tom EVER take that same road to hell ? He was too smart for that .... I assumed. Just disappointed to say the least and I've been a huge fan since 1978 and have damn near done every drug under the sun and invented a few along the way .....

He wasn't taking drugs recreationally, he got off the heroin years before he died. His death was the result of ignoring a fractured hip to continue touring, and taking increasing pain meds to get through the days as the untreated injury worsened. The COPD after a life of smoking also made the situation worse.

@@PresidentGas1 Yeah. It was stupid and he certainly seemed smarter than that. But when the heroin started, his marriage had collapsed, he was dealing with his own mental health issues, and like many others, he turned to self-medicating with drugs. Stupid but not unusual. I give him credit for getting clean. Only wish he had kicked the cigarettes and stopped his tour to take care of his injury --if he had, maybe he'd still be making great music today.

Just because you’re smart doesn’t mean you’re exempt from addiction. It’s an illness and should be treated as such. I hate to break it to anyone who believes he wasn’t using recreationally, but he most certainly didn’t receive acetyl fentanyl from his doctor. It’s an illegal street drug, not a prescription drug. He did have a form of fentanyl that is prescribed, as well as two different types of benzodiazepines. However, a doctor isn’t going to prescribe two different types of medication from the same class of drugs. I don’t doubt Tom was struggle with pain. With that said, I certainly don’t buy this narrative that he was in so much pain and didn’t want to disappoint his fans and cancel the tour. If he were in that grave of a state, the tour would’ve never been insured. Regardless of addiction, Tom is my music hero. His songs are like the gospel in my household. He’s the only musician I know who didn’t sacrifice his integrity. He consistency preformed well at live shows, and never made a bad album.

Mike is a terrific guitarist, always the perfect accompaniment to Petty who did rhythm and lead as well as vocals. Mudcrutch also was their gig of course, same symmetry. Tom was so spectacular and together they just kept coming up with new material that crushed it. Sorry to lose, Tom. Glad Mike is still in music.

Some losses are immeasurable and eternally unacceptable...TP's is most definitely 1 of those. Next to Dylan, arguably the single greatest American songwriter of the last half century. A void so big, it could crush this town...the world is a darker place without him/his music.

Still hurts almost 3 years later. I have mourned Tom's loss for three years now. I just still can't believe it because, at my age of 43, I've lived in a world where Tom Petty was always recording and touring. That was just always there and I naively thought it would always be there. How wrong I was.

sigh.....it took the death of Tom Petty for me to find him. I dived right into listening to the music that Tom and the Heartbreakers made, and have not come up for air since. It's now 07/2020. I don't listen to much else. What impresses me the most about these guys? The pure talent with absolutely NO egos attached. Every once in a bit I find a new "favorite" song. And I'll play it over and over. Most times I find in the abundance of out takes. And I wonder...how did this song NOT make it on an album. Thanks so much guys, ALL of ya, for the wonderful music that will be there for us for years to come.

I like what Northrop Frye, a professor of great merit said about Margaret Atwood; she is a free standing structure and needs no propping up from me. It's clear that Mike Campbell with Eric Clapton Jeff Beck and a couple other guys is one of the pre-eminent guitarists of the preceding and current century. His grief was real and manifest and I don't want to intrude on a moment ; of course things move on and what is private must remain so. Jeff Lynne grated on me; what I heard within a week of Tom's death is 'whoo hoo The ELO are going to be on the road. Please correct me if I'm wrong and people show their reactions in different ways but Tom was as I read it through friends in the industry, in his way. Sorry Jeff, Tom comes up trumps because of his heart and soul.

One of my favourite Tom Petty Mike Campbell stories was over the track "Walkin' From The Fire". I'm pasting that section here: [Campbell did have a particular memory of cutting this one in ’84. “I listened to the words and I said to Tom, ‘Don’t you think he’d be running from the fire?’ And he just looked at me and said, ‘Shut up.’”] (-:
