Awesome video! I was able to follow along and get the update task to work on my Terramaster F4-424 Pro NAS ...with one problem. The application doesn't restart after the update. Anything I can add to the script that tells the app to restart once the update is complete? Also, the updating certificate did NOT work (expected since you specifically said it was for Synology)...is there any chance your team would create a similar setup for Terramaster NAS?

I don't get it. When using a reverse proxy there is no need for tailscale. Just expose it to the Internet and crate a user account for your friends. Done. If you don't want anything exposed, just share the immich machine with them via tailscale, no need for a reverse proxy or domain. Done.

What's the point of SearXNG when it uses result from Google? does it query Google through POST requests? IDK if that's offered by Google.

I got remote access and https working great...I can't seem to play media or tts from HA through my google home speakers now though. I've heard playing media thorugh google home can't work with tailscale, but that was from posts 4 years ago. Is there a work around now?

This is great, been looking for this. I want to ask if it is possible to create sub domains under my machine domain, because i don't use proxmox and am running all my services under docker on the one machine, and want to use traefik. Much appreciated

Great video, but.. On the remote side, how are your other hosts deciding to use the tailscale router and not the default gateway to get to the other private subnet? ie: consider 2 typical home environments, one using 192.168.0.0/24 and one using 192.168.1.0/24. Each will have it's own ".1" gateway, and let's say I do what is in the video on machines addressed 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.1.2. The other machines in the subnet are still going to be configured to use the default gateway of .1 and never make it to the tailscale router node, correct? I am assuming there is no "magic" answer to this, but since it wasn't even mentioned, I am hoping I am wrong. Any comments or help would be greatly appreciated, otherwise I'm thinking I need to install a static route on my default gateways in each site? (or.. use a routing protocol?) Any hints for best practices here?

What happens if i dont have a tailscale? Basically, I only have One Proxmox PC server running the Docker LXC for the immich, and a Windows 11 Laptop with RTX 3060 gpu. Can i just use the ip address of the laptop (my Immich server is on the same router and same ip range as the windows 11 laptop)?

Nice. Now, I don't really have to use my VPN while traveling. I mainly use the VPN to watch streaming. This is perfect.

I have tailscale installed a daemon on PVE LXC. And I cannot figure out how to enable HTTPS. I created config file and exported TS_SERVE_CONFIG and inserted JSON there but that does not work.

Great to see the partnership with Github for secret’s detection, but like others have said, this video really doesn’t explain more than just accidentally shared secrets. It would’ve been nice to see a connection with Github Actions and storing Tailscale secrets in the repository’s environment for CICD authentication (if you’re already using Github for code management, why not?), or a much more in-depth video than solely promoting this partnership. But glad to see secret detection and rotation support come out!!

Cool video. Off topic, but i find it silly that using docker without a swarm doesn't allow you to use secrets and instead forces you to use env variables... Maybe i was missing something tho.

Impressively quick how it is detected and disabled. I'd love to see a video covering sensible practices for maintaining secrets of all kinds in a homelab container environment. You've already started in that direction with your recent examples of using tailscale for single sign on, but docker secrets seem a pain needing specific intervention to read the secrets from file and get them into the application, and presumably there are security considerations with persistent state and the different tailscale connectivity options for containers. These are all the things that get put on the "I'll get to it eventually" list!

This is snazzy. Ideally you don't leak secrets, but things happen. Cool to see solutions for a safety net.

Video should maybe be renamed to "How Github and Tailscale protect accidentally shared Secrets" I thought this was going to show me how to properly protect them... but it is really how accidents are being kept safe with this partnership.

that's bad for a gaming rig's longevity, they are electrical and mechanical (like fans etc) components, if you use them constantly, you'll shorten its lifespan. If you upgrade your gaming rig every 2 years or so, it doesn't matter, but if you are like me and buy the highest specs and use it for 10 years, then it matters.

so.. this is wireguard without having to set up a wireguard server, right? doesn't seem private to me when the data, which you can decrypt unless i do my own encryption, flows through strangers. don't get me wrong: convenience sells and im sure this is useful for non sensitive things. thanks!

I followed the instructions carefully, and have treble checked them. No update took place after I ran it. In the result tab in Task scheduler it says already running stable version 1.78.1; no update needed”. I also am not getting a new cert for Tailscale when I run the Tailscale-cert script. Any hints of what I need to do will be welcome.

Thanks for this Alex - was struggling a bit on Mac last year (it seemed a bit flakey) but this video was super clear. My tailnet now includes Mac, Windows 10, Windows 11, Linux (Ubunut & Mint), Proxmox, pFsense and Android machines, and coupled with PiHole and Traefik I can connect to all of my homelab services and devices from anywhere... it has to be the most impressive thing I've seen in 30 years of my AV/IT experience. Literally the glue that holds it all together. I have FQDN with TLS for everything, You're a real asset to the TS team, your clarity of presenting is exemplary and next time you're in the UK I'd love to buy you a beer.
