I’ve heard the Rev Gary Davis version a thousand times and you think that can’t be beaten but Keith Richards has. That was some piece of acoustic guitar playing.

Just awful! Townes was almost always shafted by clumsy overproduction of studio material, as this example demonstrates so clearly. The sheer butchery of it infuriates me. To hear him at his best look for live performance albums. Live at the Old Quarter The Whole Coffee House A Gentle Evening with Townes A Private Concert Or even better, bootleg recordings from dive bars and small venues. That's the real Townes.

Its not the song that Luke Jordan recorded. Rev Gary Davis recorded that version and I cant confirm he wrote it, but Keiths version is not the one that Jordan did. There are several songs that are titled Cocaine blues.. all unrelated.. as well they get mixed in searches with songs titled cocaine.. Often lyrics will be substituted in old blues songs, but its the music that identifies those old songs. Check Rev Gary Davis version and you will see the diifference from Jordans. as well you will see the similarity or the music to keiths version. This music was where those amazing picking patterns used by merle travis, chet atkins and mark knophler originated. Johnny Cash did a cocaine song, earlier recorded by Woddy Guthery, again not related to Keiths version.. but a fun version for sure and I just might add it to my list of numbers…. I saw it in the movie about JC, with jaquin phoenx.

Exquisite interpretation of Yeats’ poem into song. Even gives Christy Moore a run for his money. I hadn’t heard it before - so pleased to have discovered it!🖤🐦⬛
